Muffler won't fit?

The taille pipe is angled wrong. I did not buy it from a shop I bought it from someone off here. The muffler that I just removed looks like the tail pipe has been cut and welded to a new angle. My replace ment muffler is the same style muffler but has not been cut and re angled and won't fit.

The car is a 77' with a 2.7L and SSi's.

Would my replacement and the previous muffler possible be for a later model or is this common.

Thanks for any help.

PK

So I had fun when I went to install the old HEXers on my car. I needed to add 1/2" spacers between the head and the header flanges so my exhaust pipes would line up with my muffler inlet pipes. I wonder if you have th same problem. Are your SSIs thin or thick flanged? How much clearance do you have between your chain case and the heat exchanger at the back on the driver's side?

The tail pipe is sitting to high where it is touching the bumper. It sits fine on the old muffler.

I know that the 74 tail pipe is different than other years, I don't know if your 77 is similar, but I suspect it is a mid-year (74-77) thing. On my 74 the pipe is angled differently for clearance. I once bought a newer stock muffler that I had to cut the tailpie off and rotate it to fit my 74. If you look at new ones, they have 74's listed separately just for the tailpie difference. Just cut it off and reweld it at the proper angle,or buy mine.

I figured it was an earlier model thing. Thanks for the reply.
