Roll call: How many RSR replicas are currently in the works?
From time to time I see posts from people (including myself) giving status on their RSR replica projects and was wondering how many people are currently doing such conversions ??
From memory emptyo, artisticent, 911teo, and wachuko have something in the works. Who else is out there? How far are you into the project? Pics are always welcomed and encouraged! I'm working on one - though I hesitate to call it a 'RSR clone'. I prefer to call it a 'widebody longhood'. It started life as an '81 sunroof SC and is turning into a non-sunroof lightweight longhood with a Carrera 3.2 engine/brakes/suspension.

gulf blue rsr
here's mine, should be done in the next 4-6 weeks. it's a 73 with steel rear flairs, fiberglass fenders, doors, hood, trunk and bumpers. the engine is a 3.2 short stroke with individual TBs, DC62 cams, ported heads and stainless headers. coil-over rear suspension with 935 spring plates, monoballs, elephant sways and front bushings.

1986 930, going to be RSR/ RS/Turbo 100% track car, not building this to any sanctioning rules, except for the safety items, so I can really do what I want.
I am a bit further on than the pics show. I have completely gutted the car, removed the sun-roof and its housing, removed wiring harness, gas tank, front suspension, all glass, and 95% of the dreaded sound deadening/insulation etc. Will eventually go to all fiberglass hood, fenders and flares to make it really light weight. I have stitch welded the front end, have the rest of the tub to do. I am about to reinforce the rear crossmember and torsion tube area for the switch to coilovers all around. I want to mount the oil cooler through the hood, but need to get the front bumper, to get the fitting correct. I have to sort out a roll cage which will mount to suspension points. Wheels and tires, lexan for all windows, custom wiring harness, fire suppression, weld up sunroof, fabricate RSR strut bar, either modify gas tank or fuel cell,and paint flat black. Engine completely rebuilt with lots of mods, need to repair tranny if I can. If it looks like an RS or an RSR but doesn't have the chassis number to back it up then, guess what, it's a clone. A wanna be. A pretender.
Chew on that :p They do all look mean, though. Surely nothing to scoff at. :D |

My problem with "clone" is that these cars do not have the DNA of an RSR 'VIN or Case #', as you so correctly pointed out. Clones have the same DNA as the original and these do not, and that is why I keep looking for something else to call them. I refer to mine as a interpretation or an inspiration because that is the way I think of it. Plus it is far from what anybody would recognize as a RSR. Well, so's not confuse any purists ou there, I'm calling mine a Wide Body and that's that. Bodywork is done (pretty much), still have to finish interior & suspension & transmission. In fact, I'm getting ready to put one together for a customer of mine in the coming months. We've already sourced the rolling shell, and now it's just a matter of hashing out what the picture in the customer's head looks like. You know the story... Bob, I dropped the car off at the interior shop today. I've had a few teething issues in the past week, but they're getting ironed out fairly quickly. It'll be nice to finally show up at an event in my own 911 as opposed to my 914-6 or the 356 Outlaw. |

Steve could you tell me what size and weather your back arches are steel. I was told that turbo arches would do for a rsr look-a-like But didnt think they were 11" . Did you get your parts in the uk? Turbo and 73 rsr rear flares are both 11". The lips are shaped slightly different though. Turbos have more of a squared off edge as opposed to the more rounded rsr's.

I'll chip in here , as I know that Steve is currently too busy trying to kill himself whilst welding a central filler neck onto his tank!! Let's face it he's got a lot of catching up to do!! Anyway - Steve has used 11" Turbo flares on his car - these are fibreglass extensions , and he has spent quite a lot of time reshaping the outer lip to give the authentic , more rounded look. Be interesting to see an RSR look Targa - let us know if you go ahead with it. Cheers MarkMW |
More details....... 82 3ltr sc engine box and suspension (for now;) ) would have liked to up engine, brakes etc but time is sorta short :rolleyes: that will all have to follow later in the year,
Fibreglass front wings, bumpers and rear arches, 53" fibreglass tail and front bonnet (hood), sunroof roof panel cut off and replaced with solid roof skin. Cage, bucket seats and lightweight carpet set and thats it inside. Centre fill tank with 100mm filler cap, Just come in from removing fuel tank, drained petrol (sorry gas :) ) cut hole ready to weld new filler neck, put tank in the middle of the yard, stood back with a 12' length of 2"x1" and a burning rag on the end to light the fuel vapour in the tank before welding hoping for a big bang..... nothing happened not even a woof :( most diisapointed i rekon it's just a myth that petrol is flammable :D AFCuk, rear arches as I said above are fibre glass, got them off ebay second hand (cos I'm too tight to buy new )paid about £50 I think, there's a new set on at the moment for way less, front wings and bumpers also ebay secondhand 3years ago can't remember how much. You made me laugh about the burning shop rag in the tank :) It was a good test though. The person who welded the filler neck on mine suggested to have the tank professionally cleaned and even then he threw a match inside just to be sure. |

Any chance of some more information on the changing to coil overs mod, it's something I'd like to be doing in the future but not looked into much yet. The filler neck looks great!
One thing you may consider (if you haven't already) is to add a "catch" pan to get rid of any water that may enter through the hood. You can use just about anything from the kitchen :) MarkMW has some nice catch pans on his fuel tank. We added a drain nipple to the catch pan and it gets rid of water via a small hose that runs all the way towards the bottom of the fuel tank. Here is a pic of the catch pan and hose. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1176911466.jpg The coil-over suspension is a bitter-sweet setup. You gain and lose at the same time. Most people on this forum have mixed emotions about coil-overs vs torsion bars. One of the biggest problems I'm running into is "clearance". In the rear, the coils are very close to the SSI exchangers and the crossover oil pipe. In the front, it's hard to get much negative camber before the coils hit the body. I'm commited to my setup, so I'll run it as is and see how it goes. |

Are you running the 935 style control arms with your coilovers? Sorry no, I'm only running the regular a-arms. I agree, your setup allows for more flexibility... Awesome job you're doing, really dig it. By the way, I should also mention that I'm running the coils upside down in the rear so that's one of the reasons why the clearance is a little tight. |
WAYYYY behind all you guys but I'll chime in - going for the 11"/14" RSR on a 90 C2. So far I've only got the front fenders off (which is a MAJOR chore with C2's thanks to the indestructible undercoating) - and just this weekend got the climate control and fuel tank out. I've also only sourced the front bumper and fenders so far (thanks Craig!!!)

Quick question for all building WIDE cars...Our host sells OEM metal flares for about ~$390 per corner...when you look at the photo...they say "restoration design 2002".. I do recall reading back a few months that PP was having difficulty getting parts from RD. Are the flares our Host sells RD parts? I obviously would like to support our Host when purchasing parts for my project, but RD has metal flares for $215/corner... Can anyone confirm difficulties with getting metal parts from RD...or are there any other sources for metal flares? Also, I note that the flares on PP for early cars are listed as 9".. are these truely 9" flares or 11" as noted by Fastbacker a few posts up this thread? Thanks again Helmethead |
