Exclamation Odometor Shaft ? w/ Pics

This first pic of a Speedo Guage from a 71 car. My Odometor is not working because the Shaft that goes through the #s is supposed to have an Expanded end on it that would "grab" the Metal "disk" on the right hand side. Bc it doesnt seat to this disk it only Free spins in the #'s. However, Part of this shaft is still expanded, on the Very Tip of it, and if I pull it toward the Correct Metal disk it then begins to work as it should, but then the Shaft is too far in and Could fall out of place and Also the Left hand Gear would not be in correct alignment w/ the gear that meshes to it...

The second pic shows the Metal gear that should be "grabbing" the shaft.

3rd pic, shows a Odometor from a 70 car which uses Different gearing, but Also NOTE the Small Thin Aluminum part between the Metal disk and the Housing.. My 71 doesnt have that part.. Maybe thats a problem????

Any ideas on a way to have the Metal Shaft expanded to touch the Metal Disk as it should ?????

PS. .I would use the one from the 70 model but it seems to not be calibrated , MPH wise, to what it should be... i tried it today.

Hi again,

I wish I had a better memory for all the details when I did this. I do remember that my odo didn't work because that pot metal gear on the right end was spinning on the shaft. I took it all apart and used a center punch to make three or four dents in the gear fairly close to the shaft. Doing this expanded the metal just enough to tighten it up on the shaft. I had a terrible time getting things back together, but it has worked for several years now.

Be gentle with the punch as that gear could break easily (I imagine)

Steve, Thanks for the insight. I talked w/ a buddy of mine whos been working as a "digital machinist" for 13 years and fabricates Extremely small parts and such. He came over and Examplified exactly what you just said, Using a VERY thin flat screw driver and small hammer we put about 3 "knotches" on each side of the Disk, and it worked Perfectly! It was actually quite tough to get back on.. Thanks again!

That's great Mitch.

This is just the kind of thing that you hate spending lots of time on, but it drives you crazy when stuff like the odometer doesn't work.
As a note, mine has never seemed accurate as far as the speedo goes either. It seems to read high for me. I never know what to say when people ask how many miles are on my car since I have no idea how long ago the odometer quit working.
