911 Sunvisors?
Gents; Roadslayer here. Semi Newbee.Gotta' question for ya'.
Ok. The sunvisors on my '69 911 need replacing. I was hoping I could combine the good pieces from two visors and make one good one. Then buy one good one from somebody. Upon closer examination there aren't enough good parts do that. SSsssooo,,,I need two visors. Seeing how new ones are out of the question, I went to the junk yard and found two early 911 visors in trashed condition, but with good hinges. Then I found two good 944 visors with good hinges. Now here's the question. The 944 hinge piece has a flatter piece that screws into the roof. You know. The three cornered plastic thingie that has three screw holes in it that fastens to the roof. It is flatter because the 944 roof is flatter in the corner where it goes. The 911 roof has more curviture(sp) right in the corner, therefore a more curved piece to fasten the visor to the roof. Can the plastic piece on the hinge be removed from one and slid onto the other? Or do you pull the whole metal piece out of the visors and swap them? Also, the 944 visor is a little longer on the outboard edge. Will this conflict with the closing of the door? Any and all advice would be 'mucho helpfull'. I took my crappy 911 visors to an upholsterer and he remade them and they are way nicer than the original. Basically he took heavy cardboard, covered it with vinyl and edged them. Then he folded them in half over the frame and sewed around the edges.
I'll post pictures if you want.

They do all brands, but the visors will have a seam around the edge. So, if you're looking for concours perfection, these guys are not the ones for you. On the other hand, if you want something that will look good at a lower cost than OEM ones, they offer a good alternative.
Go to this page and scroll about halfway down.

OK,guys. Update. I just got back from the junkyard. I removed the trashed 911 visors and tried to install the 944s. The 944 mounting brackets are 'only' a few degrees off, making the visor about 1/2" out of wack. The 944 visor is nearly identical to the early 911 style. I tried every whichaway to mount the sucker but it just ain't hapnin'. So close! So I bought the two completely toasted 911 visors for $10.80 in the hopes of having them covered with something livable. I went to the link posted(thank you, sir) and it looks like $65 dollars is somewhat less then the nearly $300 each I was looking at for the 'real McCoy.'

I just got my sunvisors back from Darren at autosunvisors.com (aka Vinyl Spcialties). Like Scott says, if you're looking for absolute originality, this won't do it for you. My Appbiz reproduction visors (passenger side) had to be constantly re-seated on the pivot-pin after a number of up-and-downs. The original Porsche visors have the tension screw that keeps them from getting too loose. I sent the tired originals to autosunvisors.com.....good job, proper curves, no vanity mirrors, slim binding on the edges, and worth the $35 bucks a visor.

Steve. So it sounds like the first outfit isn't the way to go. I don't want my visors flopping down. 'Spoze nobody does. You sound pleased with the second place. Right?

Roadslayer,
The Appbiz visors (Pelican sells them) look OK and very similar to original. However, the fitment is such that it requires you file off the two small nubs on the pivot pins from your original Porsche visors. The nubs engage small cutouts inside of the stock visors. This keeps the pin from coming out if there's no tension on the phillips screw on the visor, but the visor would have to be rotated all the way around for the pivot pin nubs to slide out of their cutouts. The Appbiz reproduction visors require that you firmly push the modified pin into the visor until it seats. About every third time my wife used the passenger visor, the pivot pin became unseated and had to be pushed back in so the visor wouldn't flop down. There is no built-in adjustability to the amount of tension. Plus, the outboard downward curve of the visors did not conform like the originals and had a wrinkle on each visor where they curved downward. Other than the fact that the visors from autosunvisors.com does not have a vanity mirror and a seamed edge rather than heat-sealed, the fit and outboard contour is perfect (they are, after all, my original stock Porsche visors). My original pivot pin can no longer insert, turn, and lock into the new visors because I filed the nubs off for the Appbiz visors, but they insert just fine and they're not going anywhere because of the tension screws and the inboard clip securing the visors near each side of the rear-view mirror. Than, coupled with the fact that brand new pivot-pins are $111.50 EACH (!!!!!!!!!) simplified my decision to reuse my modified pins. I like originality, but the autosunvisors.com job came out really nice and you'd have to look twice to notice the difference. Steve
