High Idle at cold temperatures

Hi Gents, How long should a 82 911 SC (EURO Spec so no o2 sensor) take to warm up before idling at 950RPM? It is 0 degress Celcius outside and after driving for 20 minutes my car is still idling at 1600 RPM. When the car starts it idles around 1400 RPM and then after 30 seconds to 1 minute or so goes to 2000 RPM where it stays for around 5 - 10 minutes after which it starts to come down. When the car was idling at 1600 RPM the temperature guage indicator was halfway between the bottom rectangular marker and the half way marker.

After reading lots of threads I was convinced it was the AAR so I replaced that last week and made sure it was receiving 12 volts which it was.

Maybe this is normal, but I am not exactly enjoying braking against the engine when coming into corners.

Oh, and yes, the car will idle at 950 RPM, sometimes it will idle correctly by the time I get to work and other times it wont (20 minutes)... Can it be related to me having the heating on in the car?

Any thoughts are appreciated and thanks in advance

the AAR needs 12v but it also needs a ground. measure voltage between the 2 piins of the connector.

what type of aux air valve (AAV) do you have? is it the big round disk type on the right side or is it the small one behind the throttle body on the left.

check vacuum/mechanical advance.

check the throttle linkage, make sure the throttle plate closes completely.

check for air leaks

Hi T77911S, thanks for the reply!

The 12 volts was across the 2 pins, but maybe there is a bad connection once plugged in, I will check this weekend. The AAV is the disk version, I know is closes as I placed it in an oven and watched it close.

I will look into the mechanical advance / throttle linkage this weekend also, will have to do some reading up on it. The car (6 months ago) had all vacuum leaks fixed, but I will still have another look

I still suspect something to do with the AAV as driving home last night after the car had been parked outside for 10 hours she was idling at 950 RPM within 5 minutes, but the outside temperature was around 10 C (50 F) as opposed to 0 C (32 F)

hmm...

check the resistance of the AAR.
you could also pull the AAR, connect 12v and verify it id closing. it could just use a good cleaning.

Hazar! 1 application of contact spray to the plug of the AAR and all is working, so much better!
