Muffler Bypass....Anyone run one of these? More HP???
Fellow Pelicans,
I was thinking about buying a muffler bypass pipe for the track. Obviously it's going to be loud. But how loud is it? Is it going to give a stock motor more HP? If so; How much? Is it worth it? Let me know, Thanks.

My Question is:
Will it be loud enough to drown out Matts Voice ?????

I have a Fabspeed euro bypass, and it's quite nice. HP bump? couldn't hurt it, but it does make a nice sound.

I ran a dump pipe downstream of my pre-muffler (got rid of the muffler) at the track and on the drive home once....and it was just too loud. A couple of friends in Carreras have run this same setup at the track, while I ran a pre-muffler with the factory muffler on my Carrera, and they do not pull away from me nor have they bested my track time

bypass
Matt,
I run a fabspeed catbypass straight into their angled muffler bypass, mostly on the track. I do feel a hp difference, i did not really notice until i put everything back to stock for smog. The car has a lot more torque. Yes it is loud but at 4500-5500 rpm it sounds outstanding. that is my 2 cents. good luck. greg |

I think HP gains would depend on what is on there that you are bypassing. I personally did it to get rid of 20lbs at the rear of the car and I love the sound. It is not as loud as the V-8 open header vets and cameros. It will be interesting to see how it works at the track. I have been behind some p-cars with open pipes and they make your ears hurt. This one doesn't sound as loud as the ones I have been behind but maybe at WOT from behind it will be. I do know that at 6000 rpm your face will hurt from the smile.

Do a search on user KTL and the word "elbow". He posted a video of a 911 passing him with the bypass on. It sounded great. I like loud track cars. I pay more attention to the sound of my motor, more so than looking at the tach, for shift points, up or down.

Matt,
i've been running a fabspeed pre muffler with the muffler bypass pipe and no muffler and it is REALLY loud. I drive my car to the track and am afraid to accelerate through my neighborhood. I have received numerous compliments about the way it sounds on the track but it is just too loud if you are going to street it at all. I don't feel like i get any HP boost but that is just my .02 . I think if you do a search on pelican there is somewhat of a concensus that you need to change your chip to gain any real HP with a bypass set up. All this being said if you plan on just using the bypass on the track and re-hooking up the muffler afterwards it does sound awsome.

Take a look at the power curve of a stock Carrera, then ask yourself when a free flowing muffler is most advantageous. If you think you can increase the efficiency of the engine with the pipe to an appreciable level....without other mods, I'll sell you some "Type-R" stickers for your car.
As for the "elbow" they just make noise. Those are the guys that I referenced in my 1st post ![]() Last edited by MotoSook; 04-19-2007 at 06:55 AM.. |

![]() Further, if you wish to run at Portland International Raceway, loud cars are black-flagged and sent home, nowadays.

catbypass
Yes the car is loud and not for everyday around town. It does get peoples attention though. I tried to link a quick video of my 80sc rounding turn 1 at willow springs.
It is a blast on the track and i've had no complaints on it being too loud. I have no specific numbers on hp difference just my own feeling when i drive, and i do feel a difference. greg.80SC with cat & muffler bypass. |

Ignore Souk. It's easy to outrun the competition when you've got a fresh rebuild, 964 cams and tires wider than my house in the rear.
![]() I've run the elbow with my premuffler (Fabspeed) and i'll agree it's ridickerousry loud. But I can say with certainty that the sound is better with a premuffler that has an expansion chamber like the Fabspeed or Dansk. The straight-through cat replacement pipe is what you hear in my video of Swamp Rat Stefan passing me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MNWPJHqPZw His car is raucous and on the cusp of sounding track illegal. At one of our events he was tagged at 103dB and max is 104. I don't really get a kick out of the elbow. But it is pretty funny when i'm lazy and don't feel like putting a muffler back on after track events- leaving the toll booths at full throttle gives a new meaning to the term "loud pedal." ![]() All that BS being said, I think there is a definite gain by replacing the stock muffler. Throttle response seems a bit better and the car seems to pull better at high rpms. But by no means do I endorse the elbow for street use- or even track use for that matter. I agree overly-loud cars at the track are bothersome. Funny thing is, my car isn't one of them even with the elbow. Some of the dedicated track cars with high strung engines are unbearable to listen to as a spectator.
