Will my 911 work in Denver? Time to Sell?

Hello, all,
Because of a corporate relocation, I'm moving from LA to Denver next month. We've bought a house in Conifer, in the mountains west of Denver, where the altitude is 7000 feet.

I have a beautiful, box-stock 74 911 (CIS injection, 2.7L low compression ratio engine) with original California plates that I planned to take with me. Does anyone on the list ever drive one of the older, air-cooled 911's at this altitude? How will it work out? Is it time to sell my car?

Thanks in advance,
Jeff

There are a LOT of older aircooled 911s here. You will lose a little power due to atmospheric density. You shouldn't even need to adjust the CIS assuming that it runs properly.

You will be fine.

Bring the car, plenty of great Porsche roads
all over the state of Colorado. Car will be a bit down on power
compared to sea-level, but should work fine w/out any adjustments. I live above 7500 ft elev, no worries.
I have driven both my CIS SC & MFI 70E at elevations over
11,000 ft ...plenty of fun

My 73.5 911T targa with a 2.7 CIS ran great in Evergreen/Conifer. Was even OK up on Mt. Evans (11,000+ ft) although you loose a bit at that altitude.

Keep the car.

Put Webers on that '74! Seriously, that CIS should be fine!

Nope, it will not work at all. Have it shipped and dropped at my house in Littleton.....I'm only at 5000 ft and I'll take care of you.

Seriously, welcome to Colorado...... many of use moved from S. CA and love it here. As the others have mentioned, you will notice a power loss due to the altitude. The thinner the air, the less power. Your daily driver will suffer the same power loss

Come out and join us at a DE or two.

Also, FYI, the equivalent of 87 octane there is 85 here, 89 is 87 and
93 is 91 due to the altitude.

Welcome....
Just make sure you buy a house which has the garage and drive facing the south.....you can drive year round here, but it is easier to keep the driveway clean if the sun is helping you melt the snow and ice.

Jeff,

Welcome to Colorado!
You will really enjoy your 911.

The High Rockies are ideal 911 territory. The biggest benefit is Colorado is 94% the size of California but only 12% of the population.

One issue you will immediately recognize is the thin air. It reduces power and everything runs hotter. One of the first presents for your 911 should be a 1.82:1 engine fan. A front cooler (if you don’t have one) is a close second.

Your 911 will handily pass emissions with easy adjustment.

RMR-PCA is very active and worth joining. There are Pelican gatherings and canyon runs. There are multi car things every weekend and some get together for track days during the week (~$100/day).

If you don’t do everything DIY, there are lots of very skilled Porsche-only shops and even some competent Dealers. Pelican Parts is just overnight away.

Best,
Grady

Regarding the Colorado altitude...you will not notice any power loss in your 74 as there is less oxygen here and you will be too light headed to notice!

Welcome to the mile high state!

Congrats on the move!! I just spent two weeks in Conifer. The sceneary is absolutely breathtaking. I am jealous!! Take the Porsche I saw a few others cruising around the winding mountain/turns while I was there. I would worry more about attitude then altitude as far as the locals did not seem to take to kindly to the bmw I drove while I was there.

Jeff,

Well, we also have this white stuff. Conifer got 18 inches of snow today. This time of year there are car-size rocks that occasionally visit the highways (US-285 from Denver to Conifer was closed this afternoon for one).

The good news is we get our (and downstream SoCal’s) water this way. Today in Denver was wonderful heavy rain all day – very unusual but just right for the trees and lawns.

Best,
Grady

Welcome to CO. The roads here and into the mountains are 911 country. Nothing more therapeutic than a blast to Aspen or Breckenridge during the Spring - Autumn in a 911 (not matter what age).

My '67 Datsun roadster with a whopping 96hp and tiny SU carbs does OK at even 9,000feet!
