I took my alternator out to have it tested. The auto parts store in my town said they couldn't test it, so I decided to see how much a replacement would be. Got the number off the back (Paris Rhone 911 603 120 05) and when I searched for it on this site, I got this: Alternator, New, 911/911 Turbo (1984-89), excludes 1989 C4. Now how do I tell if I have to do the regulator move or not?? Thanks, Mike.

your '81 would not have the longer 90A unit that carreras use. to use it, a carrera fan housing would be needed, or have yours machined deeper. '81 is still external regulator, carrera is internal. not a big deal. just remove the 81 regulator and don't use the black wire that used to go to the brush pack on the '81.

If you do use the newer internally regulated alternator, I think you'll also need a small resistor (I don't know the proper value) wired in parallel with your alternator idiot light to assist in "exciting" the Carrera alternator.

Search here under "zero-ampere RPM" and "early_s_man" to learn all about that resistor.
