The posts in this thread left me wondering if this was a real project. Thanks for clearing that up. :)

rdane 04-27-2007 10:25 AM

Thanks Keith, will do.

I guess I should be more specific on my concerns. Not worried about the costs or estimates (within some kind of reason) but much more worried about the details being identified and the shop able to sort them out, well before I have to point them out. Hope than makes sense.

You added dash board back dates and the plus and minus of the different chassis models just off the top of your head so I suspect it does. Thanks.

sl951 04-27-2007 10:29 AM

If you're serious, I'd probably give SmartRacing / Jerry Woods a call.

Everytime I visit, they seem to have 934's and Flat-fan engines everywhere.

934 pic / smart racing

Do you think this engine would fit ;)

WERK I 04-27-2007 10:34 AM

While the 996 T offeres more potential HP, it comes at a cost.....namely weight. Waterpumpers bring more weight to the car. Radiators, water pumps, hoses, plus the added weight of water. ;)

911teo 04-27-2007 10:35 AM

I suspect you'd be around 2,400-2,500 pounds with a 993 tub (with interior etc).

So 5lb/hp easy.

I still think the 993 tub offers the best compromise. Yes Keith will have to sweat fabbing and grafting for the right "look", but the transmission and rear multi-link are definetly worth it.

The problem (big problem) is finding a 993 tub.

Before we contemplated the floor swap on my car I searched for such a tub... Zero leads. So timing might be important.

msucro 04-27-2007 04:02 PM

I'm going to do it to my 930...

Already have a pretty good start...

1980 911 Turbo
EFI twin plug 3.5
Extrude honed heads and intake
BB headers
Motec M48
GT35R
964 cams (need to pass smog for now)
525 at 1 bar
Guard limited slip
993TT front rotors and calipers, 930 rears
Still running big torsions and need to think about switching to coilovers...

I think I'll start by stripping the interior down and adding the flare extensions and front valance. I like the fuel filler in the hood too so I'll have to replumb that. I'll have to stay with a factory Turbo tail since my intercooler is HUGE. I like the look of the 5 spoke centerlocks like these!

Where can I buy the fiberglass/carbon fiber?

Marcus

Try this for a pic since my link didn't work before...

Looks like the best bang for the buck if you aren't looking for the last 10th of a second is something like this.

- C2 as the base unibody
- centerlock hubs + 962 17" wheels
- 993 GT2 transmission + Guard GT2 LSD
- JRZ/Moton adj shocks + ERP components
- 575HP tuned 993 TT engine (k24 turbos, remap, bigger cooler)
- SC roller for the interior/exterior conversion parts

Lofty goals would be 2300# and 575HP (110 octane race gas) or 1:4.
The numbers would put the chassis on a serious diet and the motor headed to it's upper end. (which was 600hp in the factory cars)

But if it can be accomplished it would better the original 993 GT2 factory car.

ERH 04-28-2007 12:23 PM

Please do it, vicarious thrills are still thrills :))

It will be a week until I can post some photos.

SCHNELE 04-28-2007 12:43 PM

The 993tt will no doubt be less expensive than building a 930, if I had to do it again I would still stick with the 3.4 Andial, but the 993tt is more flexible off boost as well.

934

Hi,

They are very cool cars, the one pictured is chassis 9306700162 that I used to own and drove to a 11th O/A at Sebring. The car now belongs to Michael Shafer, If you chose to do your car I have a contact that has the molds for the flares that pop rivet on. I have been making the center lock hubs front and rear since the early 90's. If you really are trying to make it accurate I can dig out some old pictures of the 934 tub ( tubs, I have restored a few of them and owned two )

Erik Mckenna 04-30-2007 04:54 AM

Dane,
It's funny.... I had ask about the 3,6 and all the while for the past 2 years I have had the "tick" of a 930 with that damn TURBO bouncing around in my head.. My brother in law has a 79 930 gutted and it's wicked! I LOVE IT!.. and my father in law has a 79 930 that he has in the past let me take to car shows.. and I LOVE that car aswell.. and it's white! which really gives me a damn woody! I need one!
I say BUILD a bad azz 934! I agree with the others.. you are a guy that will see it through and pick the right people to help build it.
I am like you though.. I REALLY want a classic turbo.. there is nothing like them! nothing!!!!and a lightweight classic turbo.. well.. I have no words to say how nasty that would be!
Good luck.
One day I will have a turbo. until them I will watch and see what you come up with!

Erik Mckenna 04-30-2007 04:58 AM

Dane,
I only ask one thing... when you build it.. please make it sit like this! haha I LOVE this stance! ahahah!
a 934 sitting like this would be killer!!!

msucro 04-30-2007 07:48 AM

Leave it alone or 934 it?

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1177948054.jpg

Craig 930 RS 04-30-2007 08:01 AM

Leave it. Looks smooth and integrated, as-is.

rdane 04-30-2007 08:11 AM

Jim, I'd love to see any more pics you have of 934s.

Eric? You need to get Craig's impressions of 930 vs 3.6. I suspect he'll tell the 3.6 is a poor man's turbo :D

But you have them at home and already know that! Going from 7#:1hp down to 5:1 makes it a no brainier for fun factor. There was a time when I couldn't imagine a driving a faster car, now my imagination has grown. Lots of folks way ahead of me. That red turbo is sooooooooo over the top. What do you think he is running for negative camber!?

Marcus...nice looking car! I'd keep it as is.

Craig 930 RS 04-30-2007 08:18 AM

Lightweight 3.6 will clobber a stock to lightly modded 930.

When my 930 was sick (40% leakdown on cyl #3), Dane and I went for a drive 3 days after I bought the 930.......he positively pulled a w a y.

As Dane implies - when it comes to acceleration........."It's all about the P/W ratio"

Hey Dan, whatcha doing today? Good day to test the 930.....
I have until about 2:00, ready to roll....

msucro 04-30-2007 08:28 AM

Thanks for the compliments!

I think it looks pretty good too! I am definitely going on a diet this year... RS interior, lightweight seats, etc. I'll price everything to do a 934 conversion just for kicks but I'm planning on spending my money for track days/tires since I'm getting a bit too chicken$hit to ride my bike like a madman anymore....

Marcushttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1177950499.jpg

air-cool-me 04-30-2007 09:10 AM

yea... took out my old car for a drive with dane a long while ago..

2420lb fresh and lightly modded 930 motor(268 at the wheels ans 291 foot lbs) http://spadger.best.vwh.net/Dyno_061120.jpg ) hooked to a 915..

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1175458735.jpg

it was absolute destruction in the turns..

but back to back you made a comment about it feeling just as fast.. i think we came to the conclusion that the 3.6 was a bit faster... but the soft suspension and the brutality of getting on boost adds perceived HP.

"It's all about the P/W ratio"
....and gearing :)

I miss having a work in progress... if you go 934 im not going to be able to take it... I will have to "R" the SWB and try and figure out how to fit 8's under its ass.:(

911teo 04-30-2007 11:59 AM

I think it will be hard for you to hit the 2,300lbs goal.
If tou go 934 look you will have to retain the alluminum front and rear bumpers, rockers, add plastic flares, big wheels etc.

We'll see what numbers we'll acheive with my car, but the interior is as gutted as possible and a 934 will weigh 100-150lbs more.

Still you are easily inside 4.25lb/hp.
Another thing I would suggest is swapping the Motronic for a Motec or DTA. This way you can have the flexibility to run 110 at the track and 91 on the street.

Go for it...

msucro 04-30-2007 12:15 PM

On the weight subject...

My 930 is 2820 with about 1/4 tank. It is relatively stock (weight wise) other than removal of the A/C and addition of the 18" wheels (Kinesis K58). I'll weigh it before and after the diet to see how much I can remove by doing the RS thing to the interior.

Any guesses on weight reduction for the interior?

Marcus

rdane 04-30-2007 12:20 PM

RS interior? 30# or less. Rear sound matt and the rear seats are the majority of that. Your easiest weight drop would be a good set of lwt sports seats. You could loose 60# in less than an hr there if you are careful.

LARennsport has been trying to off his twin turbo 964, maybe that is a good starting point? I had a 79 930 with all the bolt on HP mods and a G50 tranny, that car was damn fast. I tought about going through and hot rodding it but ended up buying a race car instead. Sound like a great project keep us posted.

Here is a shot my RSR next to a 935 recreation, makes the RSR look like just another car.

Any feedback so far

I am about to do the same thing. I have a '79 930 which has a 934 style motor and now it needs the body work to match. I have the flares and the valance and I am going to start fitting them shortly.

I have some questions:

1. Does anyone know what the welting looks like between the flare and the body?
2. How much of the original wheel arch is removed when the flares are added, so pictures would be helpful?
3. The valance has holes for an oil cooler, brake cooling ducts and water radiators (I assume for the originals intercooler?). I intend to use a front oil cooler, any ideas what model?
4. Still on the valance, I thought about fitting some lights into the water radiator holes, does anyone have any better ideas?
5. The flares look like they attach with unpainted chrome fasteners or rivets, does anyone know for sure?

In fact is there a good reference text to look at for the 934?

Thanks

911teo 05-10-2007 08:19 AM

The 2 extra openings int he valance were indeed for the water-to-air intercoolers.

The extra lights is a solution....

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1178813551.jpg

I always thought about putting 2 separate A/C condensers up there.
Also what IC are you running? To be true to the 934 your tail will not allow for a big intercooler...

I have heard of people working on a 996 TT style set up, with intercoolers inside the flares...

Looks like a Zuffenhaus type job....

As per how much stock flare is retained after the welding of the extensions... I have no clue...

For the front oil cooler you could go with a setrab or mocal. Go with the bigest avaliable (std 172), it fits perfectly in the opening.

The brake openings are for std brake cooling ducts. You can use AJUSA plates on the hubs....

Post some pics!

I love the 934!

rfn026 05-10-2007 09:42 AM

There will be several 934s at Rennsport in Nov. That might be a good time for people to get some detailed puctures. 934s just aren't that common. a lot of them were tranformed into 935s back in the day. Finding a really original 934 maybe even harder than finding an original 935.

These were all race cars. No one gave a ****.

They cared, but it was about staying competitive.
Oh, and after a shunt might as well upgrade.

There's usually a few at the Brian Redman Challenge at Road America in July. You can get up close and personal with the tuners/mechanics/cars in the paddocks.

Take a look at this guy's 934 clone... He did a nice job.

When I took the stock seats out of my SC to re-finish them a few years ago I was suprised at how light they were. It might not be cost effective to buy "lightweight" sport/racing seats to save a few pounds. If it's the "look" one's after then that's different.

Wil Ferch 07-14-2007 05:19 PM

My power/heated stock seats weigh ~ 55 lbs each...that's 110 lbs. ( 85 Carrera).

If I used 2x shell buckets at 17 lbs each, that would be 34 lbs and a weight savings of 76 lbs... not shabby for a one-change deal !!!

do a search for 'meredithjr' as a partial name. He is building a 934 out of a 930 and posted some pics of it.
