fitting a cat after SSI?

hi,
i am buying a 911SC with a lot of mods to it. And, at current state, it cannot pass emission test in Vancouver (not as strict as California, but not much easier).

I heard someone had put a cat AFTER a SSI to pass emission test. I heard that the cat was integrated with the muffler. Anyone had experience with this? pics?

Thank you.

I think Moses has installed some aftermarket cats that worked for him. Search quiet muffler and you should find it. If not, let me know and I will try to find it for you.

Good luck,
Darrell

I have been told that you can pass emissions without a cat if your engine is healthy and the O2 sensor is plugged in (if the SC that you are considering has L-Jetronic). Pre-L-Jet cars have to be set to run lean.
If BC has a visual inspection then you won't pass due to the SSI's.

Does the car HAVE to have a cat and pass a visual inspection? If not, an SC can pass......if a visual is required, just shut up, act dumb and let them think the SSIs are dual cats....

I did that for years down here in Smog Hell. Also, do a pretest and adjust mixture if needed. Best to also replace the 02 sensor. It's a wear item.

for 1978 cars, we don't need a cat to pass visual inspection.
and, this car has a pair of Webers... no more CIS, no oxygen sensor.

thanks, Darrell, i will try search "quiet muffler".

anyone has pic of this "cat/muffler" combo?

I don't think that you will pass with carburators, even with a cat. Carbs run so rich that they will poison a cat. That is the reason no OEM has built cars with carbs inthe last twenty-odd years.

If your engine is running clean, you might try cutting a heat shield off of anything that would cover the rear section of exhaust, it worked on my SC, mind you I went thru Air care in Surrey.

Arrow

Took the car in with a test pipe in place of the cat. The HC reading was way high and so my car failed emmissions. Installed the cat and retested with pass the next day. I totally agree with the fact that those emmissions people don't have a clue about 911's.

If emmissions wasn't a concern I would install a pair of George's headers with a m&k muff. For the time beeing maybe someone can figure out how to get heat and pass emmissions with a header setup.

Local Hot Rodder that owns a muff shop. He's a Salt Flat junkie...has a Studie with a Big Gnarly motor that does over 200mph.....but has a nasty habit of doing 360s at about 175mph.....

He's a real artist....installed and parts was about $350, it also has an O2 bung at the collector.
