Impact of Rebild/Repair Costs
I've been thinking (fuming, actually) about the Excellence article where the mechanic quoted over $22,000 for a rebuild on an SC. I was also just quoted $8,000-$10,000 for a valve job here in Dallas by a highly respected Porsche shop...who casually admitted 80% of the cost was "cleaning stuff up"....his exact words.
The knee jerk question is "How the #%*@ can they charge this?!" and the obvious answer is ...cuz the CAN!. And truthfully I'm fine with that since I freely chose to buy a 911, two actually, but are there implications for us fans of old Porsches? Are some shops at risk of killing the goose that produces the golden egg...at some point do people stop wanting Porsches since they've lost their reputation as the "common man's super car" Good news though I guess for Pelican! and anyone like me who is sort of forced to tackle a top end myself. And I realize these are just toys, they're just getting to be really expensive toys. Not sure what my question was...just wondering about the future of us "old Porsche" fans.

It sure pays to be handy with a wrench. The parts for a top end rebuild are about $2500? Labor is definitely a supply and demand issue. If that Porsche shop was starving for work, they might be a little less expensive.
