				Steve Wong Chip

My 85 911 Targa Runs better than ever, thanks to Steve Wongs Chip. My DME had a 2k program, I unsoldered the jumper and moved it and soldered it to its new location and then installed the chip. My cars production date was 6/85 so the update to the DME was necessary. I did not even have to adjust the idle, it idles at 880. My car idled rough before even with a tune up and the valves adjusted. I have the stock exhaust system, just a different air induction system. For me there is a noticeable performance gain. I recommend to buy one of these chips you will not regret it. Just my 2 cents. Thanks for listening!!!

Agreed, I think the SW chip did a lot in helping my car not only run better but change it's entire personality. Oh no, we all know what's coming next! Put your helmets on and high water pants!

john4061, Just curious, did you purchase the "off the shelf" (for lack of a better term) SW chip for a stock 3.2 or something custom? Thanks!

I have an 85 Targa with a build complete date of 7/2/85, does this mean I'd have to do some soldering to move things around also? For some reason, I thought this was straight chip replacement, no soldering.

Goth / Wnsgc : I talked to Steve Wong himself. He recommended the stock chip because the only change to my car was a different kind of air filter. (cone filter). He has different chips for different mods to your car. Examples, headers, ssi exhaust system, etc. also he can make custom chips. Wnsgc : I believe you will have the same DME circuit board I have. To change to from a 2k to a 4k program the new chip needs you will have to move the one jumper wire. But Steve said he would do that for free if you mailed your DME to him and paid for postage both ways . Also , Steve had a European chip that you could just pop in. This chip is a 2k chip and by-passes you cat. converter, so you would have to just disconnect your oxygen sensor. Steve recommends to move the jumper to get the Best bang for your buck, and to update the DME and put the 4k chip in. There is a 50/50 chance from 84 to 87 you will have to move the jumper. My car was made 6/85 and I had to move the jumper.

Hmm... My build date was 03/85, and according to the picture on the instructions, I did not have to move the jumper. What would happen if you put the chip into the board and it is 2k? Would the car run badly? I now wish I would have taken photographs while I had the DME open. I think that bending the metal keepers on the DME again and again will cause them to break off.

JeffreyNMemphis: Steve Wong said there was a 50/50 chance you would have to move the jumper. But, in gambling I was not always too lucky! lol

Thanks Craig. I called Steve Wong to confirm. My car started right up and runs terrific. It seems to idle at about 880 like the instructions suggested. Steve said most of the 1985 and later DMEs are 4k. But the graphic instructions make it clear if you have the 2k jumper or not. As I recall, it was clear that my board was not jumped like the picture of a 2k board. With the sport muffler, cat bypass and chip, my car seems to excelerate much easier. I love the sound compared to stock. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WG0ZsGmB020

My car had a build date of October, 1984, and had a 2k board, easily identified from Steve's web site and directions. I was not comfortable soldering. Steve graciously offered to modify the board and install the chip for the cost of shipping. Luckily, a friend of mine repairs high end audio, and was easily able to do the job. With Steve's chip, the car runs and accelerates much more smoothly -- no hesitation at all -- and feels more like a new car than a 22 year old one. A little unexpectedly, after installing the chip, gas mileage increased by 3mpg for my normal 911 driving pattern. Based on my experience, Steve's chip is a must have for a 1985. Paul

john4061, Thanks for your response. I should have mentioned my reason for asking: My engine is stock except for the intake, which sounds similar to yours. Anyway, you answered my question...Thanks Again
