The Gold Plated Porsche

Yesterday afternoon my mom gave me an unexpected present; a copy of Stephan Wilkinson' The Gold Plated Porsche . I had been eager to read this book since I first heard about it. "It's about an '83 SC, just like yours." She told me, as I excitedly began reading the preface.
I could not put this book down and finished reading it in a few hours. I have to say that this was an excellently written, entertaining, humorous look at the trials and tribulations of 911 ownership and restoration. Having been through many of the same experiences as the author, I found myself grinning and nodding my head while reading some of the anecdotes. I highly reccommend this book to any Porsche owner and anyone who is thinking about purchasing a used 911. Mr. Wilkinson very effectively sums up the joys of owning one of these fine automobiles and why we take painstaking cares to modify and maintain these 20-30 year old cars. This book will become a prized addition to my automotive library and will be shared with any fellow enthusiast who wishes to have a first hand look into our crazy, little world. In fact, my father, the PO of my 911 has already asked to borrow it.
Just wanted to say congratulations to the author and happy motoring to all fellow Pelicanites and Porschephiles out there!

Yes, I thought I recalled seeing his name here. I am a frequent lurker and sometimes poster. I have found the search button to be so useful, I rarely need to post my questions here, but I felt compelled to share my thoughts on this book. On another subject I will be posting some pics soon, as I finally had my ducktail fitted and painted (finally)!

I've read the book a couple of times. Very entertaining. I've appreciated Mr Wilkinson's contributions here at Pelican.

I bought and read it during a recent recuperation from minor hernia surgery and was worried it would be too funny from comments I had read here.
It was entertaining and a nice light read, but I got the impression he wrote it to recoup his over-investment in the restoration.
So if you're reading this, Stephen, you're welcome.

Regards,

Some loved it, some liked it, others found the content lacking sufficient P-car detail. Personally, I enjoyed the Peter Egan-esque take on P-car ownership. If Egan, B.S. Levy, or Persig lived on your bookshelf, and you are a Pelicanite, I would unreservedly recommend this book. If you're looking for a how-to, it won't be your bag. I'd read another if he wrote another.

Joe - I go to work everyday to fund my car habit, and you probably do too - what's different? Hope the healing process goes well, and you get back into that Carrera very soon.

Another name for the book could have been; Bash a Targa .

Actually Steve, I was going to make a joke about that. Something to do with, "...Good Ole Mr. Wilkinson" ala Dennis the Menace. But since I don't REALLY know you (we just feel like we do from all the exchanges here over the years) I decided, "Give the man his due, he's a published author, a good friendly guy - and besides he's got a helluva nice car!".

Anyway, Standing O from me for not only writing so well, but also for writing about a 911 and managing to make it as entertaining as you did. You're in my permanent library. Sequel? Aw c'mon, there must be room in that garage for another kind of car, no?

I actually got quite a chuckle from his observation that 'all targas leak, and their owners deserve it."

Oh, the jocularity.

I have the book, however I have the "Targa Friendly revised edition" ..... I carefully removed that page.

Steve-
Thought I'd see you at Lime Rock last weekend. I was looking forward to seeing the Solid Gold Porsche in person. BTW, my car is fully sorted, if you want to go for a little drive sometime.

I haven't read the book, but do look forward to picking a copy up sometime soon, where can I purchase it? Also, as Targa owner...eh, he's right, they ALL leak. Congrats Mr. Dubya
