good substitutes for windshield/window seal trim metal?

What have people substituted, with success, for the soft aluminum trim that goes into the external groove in windshield and window seals? (I'm in this case dealing with the rear quarter windows, not the windshield.)

I've seen round brass rod, either 3/32 or 1/8 inch, mentioned, as well as "aluminum ground wire," whatever that is. I also remember somebody posting about using some kind of screen-window repair ferrule.

Any suggestions?

Damn. I already bought 964 quarter window seals, assuming that they wouldn't use the trim strips because 964 windshields don't, but I was wrong.

No, I'm gonna try to make these 964 seals work with Plexiglas and maybe 1/8" brass rod in place of those miserable trim strips. If I could ever catch the Weissacher who invented 'em...

Brook moved to San Francisco, by the way, not Burlington-by-the-Sea (Portland).

I seem to recall that someone used 5/32 black wire sourced from Home Depot in place of the aluminum trim. I'm sure it would bend easily.

That's an outstanding idea, Will--better yet, I had a roll of it in the shop. 10AWG Radio Shack "automotive hookup wire" has an o.d. of exactly 5/32" and fits tightly into the trim-strip slot. Thanks!
