Can I move the car without muffler?
 

Maybe dumb question but I rather be on the safe side...

While trying to replace the O2 sensor from hell (It's been soaking on liquid wrench all day and still not loose :mad: ) I took the cat converter out.
But looks like I'll need to move the car to the other side of the garage.

Is that okay?
Won't damage anything?
Since the O2 sensor is disconnected will that have any effect?

just do it quick and dont rev it up or you will probrobly set fire to somthing

what about if you had took the headers off too and had no exhuast system on? Sorry to highjack but I have been wondering the same thing to.

You'll it so well w/o a muffler, you won't want to put it back on...Don't do it w/o headers; it's a good way to damage a valve. Hot exhaust valves don't like the cold air...

I was tempted to fire up my c4 with the cat off too but the battery was dead from leaving the hood open...

Bad idea to take the headers off, though I realize the poster was just joking. You need at least some hot metal between the valves and a rush of cold air when you shut the engine down. But then a lot of very powerful airplanes with Merlin, Allison, Wright and Pratt engines fly with stub exhausts, one per cylinder. So you'll be fine with the headers on. Hell, take it around the block...

Free the sensor with a breaker bar.

3 days took me to undo that O2 sensor:
Day 1 I used the special socket for this task and the impact wrench, about 650 ft/lbs of torque so the socket was just expanding and started to round off the edges..
Day 2 more liquid wrench and a visit to home depot for a long wrench and a propane kit
Day 3 Using the extra long wrench and a hammer the bugger came off :)

So all is good but I didn't get to hear the engine without the muffler...

ps. I'll return the propane and buy MAP just in case...

When you put the sensor back in, coat the threads with anti-seize compound and it will come out easily next time. Wurth makes some of the best--a light grease thoroughly impregnated with microscopic copper particles. Their Cu-1200 is intended for very high-temp applications like this.

The new O2 sensor came with anti-seize on the threads. I'm glad cause I found I don't have any and everything is closed around here after 4:00 PM
Maybe Bosch realized it was just smart to put the anti-seize and save the mechanics from getting hernias or worse.. ;)

I used the "silver-colored" (graphite-based?) anti-seize for years.

When I put my exhaust back together, someone suggested the higher-temp stuff with the copper particles. It works very well, even in extreme-heat environments.

back in the day, when my first car's muffler fell off it sounded sooooo cool...

Oh yeah, it was a 1300cc 1977 Honda Civic. Only ever sounded cool with no muffler.
