rear wheel alignment
Phoebe (1974 911) has a strange alignment issue, her left rear wheel sticks out about 10 mm more than the right, causing tire rub on my new fuchs. I have looked for bent or damaged suspension, chasis, all looks ok. Anyone ever come across this before ?

This probably has nothing to do with your alignment.
It could be just the variation in our hand-made cars, but 10 mm is a lot... I think there is about 3-4 mm left-right variation in the distance from the edge of the tire to the fender lip on the rear of my 911.

Real bad bushings could cause some of this, are you taking the measurment off the top of the wheel? if so is your camber the same for each?

the right side (that does not rub) appears to have more camber than the left, but how do I adjust that ?
thx

I took some more measurements and the left side does actually stick out farther, not just a camber issue. Guess I'll be pulling it all apart to try and figure out why.

Bump, surely someone has seen this before. I have started disassembly but nothing is jumping out at me for the culprit. I may have to just put flares on her.

You may want to consider swapping wheels from one side to the other to see if you still have this issue and that it isn't the wheel/tire itself. If you have unidirectional tires on, you will obviously need to switch back.

pozee has a good point, as you did mention your "new fuchs." Check the numbers on the back of each and if they are not the same, maybe one has a different offset. If you find they are different, post the numbers. Many here know the codes for the offsets.

We tried swapping the tires already and it makes no difference. I think I found the issue, it looks like the left rear fender is actually pushed in a little down in the rear. I have pulled it out a bit and it looks better. So good news, suspension is probably ok. Bad news is I am afraid I'll damage the fender if I pull any harder. Maybe this is a good excuse for flares

I have the same problem with mine since I added the 1/2" spacers, checked to see that both offsets were equal, had the care aligned, still the left tire is further out than the right! I'll check the trailing arm assembly next. Any other folks out there with this mystery?

It would help if the actual Fuchs numbers would be posted along with the year/type of 911 to prevent too much guessing.
So, what size tires on what size Fuchs?

My 79 SC has the same issue even with new rear bushings. The left rear wheel has about 10-12 mm less clearance in the wheel housing than the right. I can run an 8 inch wide 944 offset wheel on the passenger side but not the drivers side. My engine and tranny mounts are new also. Not sure why the car was designed with this measurable drive-line offset?

Mine has the same issue. My right wheel is out a good 10mmm or more as opposed to the left. Rubbing is an issue.
I have measured all the chassis point s and found them to be normal, so the basic chassis is squeare, and my susp is all new, with mono balls in the t arms. In my case, it's how they made it. Grrr, LOL

I'm glad I am in good company with the wheel to body issues. I think I am good to go now with massaging the fender out a bit. I'll know more when the engine is back together....................... That's another story.

Thanks, I'll measure the sheetmetal next, and ultimately play with different spacers to get the desired outcome. I'll be looking at doing a steel factory style widebody upgrade by year's end.
I'm surprised that none of the three porsche shops have been able to diagnose this, Pelican Parts forum RULES! |
