question about odometer rebuild
hi..my odometer died and ive ordered and received the new gear...(assuming its the gear)..i have not yet taken the speedometer apart but plan to in the next few days. ive read the tech article on Pelican, and, I have read the section in 101 Projects.. Neither state that the needle needs to be removed.
However, when I spoke to Odometer Gears, Ltd, he mentioned that removing the needle would be required. So, now Im not sure and I want to avoid having to recalibrate the speedo. Can anyone who has done this repair advise me if the needle must come off? Its an 83 911SC.. VDO speedo. Thanks alot. |
I don't remember taking the needle off when I did mine. I remember because I read that I would have to get the speedo re-calibrated if I did, so I made sure I did not. Cheers, Mike.

Try this link, with pictures. I remember using needle nose pliers to remove the screws under the dial face  http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=196987&highlight=odomet er

the link isnt working... |
m_wuebben or anyone that can help...i got the gauge apart and found the 4 screws behind the face which hold the white plastic housing.
i managed to get a jewelers screwdrive sideways and loosened the screws. HOWEVER, once I got them all pretty loose, I noticed the needle was tightly pressed up against the face and I got nervous I was damaging it and so I put it all back together and tested it in the car to make sure the needle still works. It does. Unfortunately I could not get the new gear onto the shaft because the plastic housing was in the way, even with it loose. I also had the cylindical metal gear pot or whatever it is off...still couldnt squeeze the gear in. Am I missing something? I hate to spend the money on something I should be able to fix when I need so many other little things fixed. The tech article and 101 Projects article are very different than this gauge Thank you for any suggestings. This is a VDO, electronic speedo from an 83. |

THank you....that was good. I read it, after I had tried for the second time. Ive decided that Ill just wait until winter and then send it in for a pro. 4 frustrating hours is enough...and with no beers in my fridge. ..im just too afraid ill ruin the needle.
