Turbo Tail optionon an 86 carrera cab?

Does anyone know if the a turbo tail came as an option on an 86 non-turbo carrera cabriolet? I have an OEM turbo tail on mine but am not sure if it came like this. I am thinking on converting it to a Carrera tail.

Those were a option on the Sc through 964, not sure about the 911s from 74-77

Carrera's use to have the turbo tail or whale tail as an option

It may have been dealer installed but the M473 option was the Carrera tail and front p/u lip

M473 tail

In the Porsche 911 red book option M473 states with spoilers but does not specify turbo or whale tail.

Maybe the "Porsche 911 red book" should be more specific

All of the turbo tails on '84-89 n/b Careras were added by the dealers or the owners.

Factory M473 was the Carrera tail I showed. Believe me, I lived through and shopped cars in that era. Until the 993RS the only car that tempted me from my '76 C3 was an '86 RoW M473 equipped car.

Thanks for the feedback. So it sounds like there is probably a chance that this was an option or at lease something that was added on by th dealer. I really like the look of the Carrera tail and am thinking of replacing my Turbo Tail. It also looks to be much ligher.

In my humble opinion - the turbo "tea tray" tail looks totally disproportionate on the narrow bodied 911.

Interesting factoid..maybe Bill V wants to answer this one.

I helped a friend investigate and buy a pristine 83 SC lately. Low miles and full documentation including window sticker and such. It shows "front and rear spoiler option" on various papers, but does not indicate type of rear spoiler. Oddly, the car has the Turbo style rear spoiler with the upflips on 3 sides and the deep base. However...it ALSO has the factory appropriate "L" shaped reinforcement piece on the underside of the lid, to better support the base. If this was added "later"...most people don't bother with this seemingly trivial ( but important) detail. If there...it's usually an indication of a factory install.

So...it "looks" like this car came from the factory with a Turbo rear tail...something until now I would have thought impossible. I don't believe the holes that would be drilled in the deck to accommodate the tail would be in the same locations for a Turbo or Carrera base. Plus, I believe the deck lid itself ( for a Turbo) would have a larger "hole" or aperture, since the deep base of a Turbo tail was designed to allow clearance for all the turbo stuff that otherwise would poke thru the lid ( Porsche's version of the "power bulge" hood !). This lid had the SC/Carrera sized hole.

Anyone?

That's because on US cars from MY '81 to '83 the 3.3 turbo "Tea Tray" was the M473 spoiler. Starting in '80 the Weissach tail which is like the earlier whale tail was a factory option and could be fitted as well by special request.

prior to that(MY'80) the black p/u whale was the only one optionally fitted to SCs

Will do you have a picture of the L shape reinforcement piece?

my911cab:

No I don't , unfortunately, but think "L" shaped angle iron in principle.....running left-to-right capturing all the mounting holes/bolt heads. About 8-10 mm height on each "leg" of the "L". Black.

Maybe others who posted pics of their tails can re-post here. I'm sure I saw that in other threads.

You don't mention what you have at the front?

You should check that, factory said not to run a rear tail/spoiler without front aero as well.
