Light weight battery advice needed
Hello everyone,
I have a back-dated 78SC, lightweight, st/rs/911r type project going on that is more of a track car than a street car but will be used for both. I have done all I can to lighten the car and I am considering using the Odyssey 680 but have concerns about it being up to the job. My car has historic plates and won't be used much more than 400-1000 miles a year. The manufacturer actually does not recommend using it except in race cars. I don't plan on using the wipers much, have no AC anymore, no more sunroof or electric windows. Does anyone have any experience with this battery in street applications? It seems like an easy, inexpensive way to shed 30-40 lbs but I have a feeling it could let me down in the power department. Many thanks, Mark ![]() ![]() ![]()

Great! Just what I wanted to hear. If you don't mind, how often do you use your car?

You can also look at the Braille bateries I am using one in my race car high compression motor, wipers, motec, camera, coolsuit, helmet fan, etc and of course I run an alternator. The engine has 12.6:1 compression and requires alot to turn it over and the new Braille handles it better than the Odyssey I had before plus it is 9 lbs lighter at 16 lbs.

Maybe a Miata battery? They are small, but still do a fine job on a street car. Just a thought.

I put one in my '73 911. I used to drive it almost daily until I got the 914. Now she just sits and waits for the next AX or DE.
Do a search, plenty of info already here. ![]()

I have been using one in my '69. No problems sofar. It may not crank a high compression engine though. I relocated to the smugglers box. Sometimes the car is not started for weeks, and it has alwayes cranked fine, and ran the accessories fine

Cool project Mark. As Dantilla said a lot of guys run Miata batteries in the smugglers box with good results - this is what I plan to do.

the pc 680 weighs 14 lbs and has served me well for 4 years- car sits for weeks at a time and starts up (albeit a little slowly on 10.5:1 compression). The small tender charger overnite gets it back to life whenever i have waited too long
another option is the garden tractor batteries- small and inexpensive. We used to put those in before the pc 680 with support bracket became available
