Help which to buy 911 or 964
I'm in the market for a different car I have it narrowed down to a 87- Carrera or a 964 I really like the 964 looks but not sure if all the bell's and whistles are worth the extra 50hp that the carrera lacks any one care to share their experiences.

you just have to drive both and see which you like better. They are very different driving experiences.
My last time around, i considered a 964, but found I didn't like the driving feel of them. (I also didn't like the fact that most of the ones I looked at leaked like a sieve - the bottom of almost all of them were totally covered with oil). I much preferred a G50 Carrera. |

The only problem not to many for sale around here I have had a midyear 911 so I know the carrera would drive relatively similar more power better trans etc.

My 964 experience is kind of growing on me.....Just got it out on the road a couple of weeks ago
Must admit that for a more everday car it is a positive experience - but the minute I step into my SC based speedster I feel it is where I belong - but then again this is a plain good weather car which is also build from scratch to my specs....... ![]() The 964 is a tad faster and does everything in a more sivilized manner - mind you that mine is a C4 with RS set up suspension. You HAVE to get a cup pipe for more sound.....I am used to dual out SS Dansk mufflers... As for the G50 Carrera - I have driven my friends -89 speedster and another -88 coupe quite a bit - great cars except for the 217 cat engines they have compared to the 231 ROW engines that all pre G50 have over here which feels a lot more peppier Maybe I got it backwards - but if I keep the 964 for a longer time I will most likely backdate the looks to a -73 2.8 RSR like Porsche Doc's car. And of course keep my SC based speedster with 964 look......hehe I am also in constant search for the perfect -78 930 white / -73 914 white & silver longhood 911 Targa - so I guess I tend to lean towards "torsion bar" 915/901 porsches.

There are concentrations of these cars in the west and southwest US that are well cared for, lower miles in many cases, and dry climate vehicles. Let the folks on here assist you in your search, and have some fun with it, and the nice long drive home!! ![]()

I have had my 964 for over two years and still wear a stupid grin everytime I get behind the wheel.
I have had SC's and loved them...the 964 was a preference for me because I wants to try something newer. Having to choose between which model of 911 we would like to buy ia predicament all of us would like ![]()

If to be driven almost daily, a nice, updated 964 is the better all around car. And I am unbiased - I have an 83 SC and I love the rawness and feel of the non-hydrolic clutch, non-power steering, etc, BUT it is a fair weather car that I don't have to drive in rush hour traffic. It is not a lot of fun in heavy traffic, and first gear on the SC's and Carrerra's is practically useless. If I was buying one as a daily driver, I would get the 964, or maybe even (go ahead and screech) a 996.

I have had both cars. The 911 had its share of problems as does the 964. The 964 leaks much more oil too. However, the 964 is more comfotable, quicker and the wife likes much better too!!! (the later is probably the most important factor).
Good Luck in your quest!!!!
