I believe the original finish was like bare AL, with some kind of clear coat that wore off or yellowed with age esp. in storage. I don't think they were plated from ATE.

I agree

here are some NOS S calipers

w/ age they look more like this

though it is entirely possible that at some point they were cad plated or anodized

I thought I saw in another thread a note from someone that they polished S calipers before sending them out to get plated, so they would have a shiny look to them? Maybe just something did. So the stock finish is the same for early and late versions?

Would a Zinc or Cadmium coating hold up to the heat?

I cleaned mine up and then polished them. They look pretty good that way. You don't have to actually remove all the pits, etc. Just shine them. They're also easier to keep clean if they're polished.

My 911S calipers are on the cover of my new autocross book. This should give you an idea of what they look like.

That looks more like an M caliper.

The early S calipers were just bare aluminum.
The late S calipers (with the broad nose) had a coating on them, but I'm not positive as to it's nature. That is why they are not silvery in color.

M feed is at the bottom

A feed is at the middle(though usually not on a lateral face)

Fernando has an "M" front caliper so he does not have an "S" front suspension; the caliper mount bolts have a 3" spacing instead of the 3.5" spacing for the "S" or "A" calipers.

Bill shows the rear "M" caliper that has the brake line coming off of the end of the casting.

Bill shows the "A" caliper in his last picture, and here are a few more views:

DO YOU KNOW ANYBODY THAT WANTS TO GET RID OF A SET OF S CALIPERS FOR MY 69 S.
I HAVE THE S SUSPENSSION MIXED UP WITH THE OTHER CAR´S
I HAVE FOUR DIFFERENT CARS I´M WORKING ON, I ALSO NEED FRONT AND REAR SHOCKS TO REPLACE THE ONES ON MY CAR, THEY´RE COMPLETLY GONE. I THINK MY CAR HAD KONIS.

Porsche Crest

The original new "S" calipers had a yellowish gold anodized coating.

I had S calipers on my 79 SC with Koni struts. The car was not stock.

The S calipers I had were anodized. I had to strip them down before polishing them. I high polished them to match my high polished fuchs. If they had no coating the aluminum would corrode and pit rather quickly.

Paint them gloss black. You wont even see them behind the rim that way and the gloss is easier to get the Mothers off of than if they are flat black. Tried it both ways.
