Non-Porsche Lesson Learned

I had this really brilliant idea a few months ago to sell my 1985 Porsche 911 Carrera and find something new. Having owned a few early 911's this is what I loved...back to the basic prosche drivers. Well to make a Long story short, I found my self with a 2000 Corvette Fixed Roof coupe 6 speed in my garage and a confused wife thinking im going through my mid life crisis (im 25 years old). After spending a few weeks with this car driving it on the sunny days, I find the only enjoyment I get is revving it up listening to the V-8 and smoking the tires. Now we found the only 2 positives i've found with this car, lets look at the negatives. There is a computer for everything, and I mean everything. The heads up display makes me feel like im playing 1992 video game, this computer that tells me that 1 of my tires has 1 less psi that the other....I think there is a computer to tell me if my fart is wet or dry. All in all, pulling in the to the grocery store parking lot yesterday, I get looked at like im 55 years old....not that it's old but I am not wanting to put on that hat yet.

Needless to say, I just wanted to say that I will be back in a early 911 again. All of the people that get to drive these early 911's are lucky to drive such a wonderful car, with not one piece of computer controlled hardware to watch what we do. There is something to be had by have 4 real guages, some pedals, a shifter and a steering wheel and the most wonderful Aircooled 6 cylinder sound bar none. The rest for you to decide when YOUR driving the car.

Some folks REALLY like the torque of the V-8. I love the torque/power that a V-8 puts down. I grew up with a bunch of muscle-car guys. But a 911 is so much more.

A corvette is like a blonde airhead fake boobed bimbo. Great body, but that's about it.

A 911 is like a smart, funny, horny, aerobics instructor with a job that pays well. Hot and you get everything else too.

Good info, funny you posted this as I actually found myself considering the same this weekend as I really like the latest vettes. Good to know I should keep my 911 for a while longer.

Don't get me wrong. The corvette is a great car for the dollar and performs really well. It just has no character. Its like driving a big cadillac with some nitroglycern pills in the gas tank to wake it up.

Well, let's hope you get back into a 911 soon. As a long time German steel fanatic, I'm not surprised that you didn't like 'Merican steel as much. Some of the old stuff, mid '60s is fun, but I can't say the newer Yankee cars do much for me.

I had a 97 corvette. It was a great car. You cannot go wrong with a c5 corvette.(bang for the buck that is)

I respect most Corvettes because they will smoke my old 911 but I have found nothing to get excited about. Seriously, I have never even considered buying a Corvette, even when shopping for my fun car.

Now, the new ZR-1 is one that I would add to my fantasy collection, should I ever win the lottery.

I have a good friend with a C6, great car. We were driving to Lime Rock for the vintage races and doing some 'spirited driving'. The ole' lady with a 3.6L transplant stuck right with him, much to his chagrin, (and actually out handled the C6). Want the best of both words, put a 3.6L in a mid or early year car. The grin won't leave your face.

The HUD and Stability control turn off ...
You might not like it because it's harder (more illegal) to drive it at its limits on public roads than an older 911. I must admit, I don't care much for them either (the Z06 excepted - I have briefly flogged one, and it was a hoot), but I've never had the opportunity to drive one on a track. I suspect I might like it ...

it's difficult to bag on a 'Vette, they truly are very nice cars. My personal opinion is that they lack a certain "soul"...but they certainly don't lack balls.

I think it's a hoot that you can find many mid '80s 'vettes in the neighborhood of $3.5-$5K. It might be interesting to see what happens with the current edition in 20+ years.

Usually the only Corvettes you see at an autocross is a few years old at most. I have not seen a 80s Vette at an autocross since the mid 90s. Of course that is true of most other makes.

Delighted to read your take on the Vette. Having just sold a rare Alfa the money is itching to go intyo another car, but I just can't find much that would stir me more than my old 944 turbos, 911s, or 930s or even my 928s. Thought about a 996 Turbo, or a 996 C2 and I just can't get into the 21st century due to increased mass and the dang video game syndrome you mentioned. There are some incredible bargains out there, but my old iron seems to be more interesting. Maybe I'm stuck in the last century for good.
