73 MFI 2.4 wont start

Hi guys,

Its a 2.4 with MFi, 1973 car.
Ok this is what happened, in order...

I moved the car yesterday, I left it running and as i got out it stalled.
I knew the petrol was very low so I added 20 litres of fresh fuel.
Tried to start and nothing not even a splutter.
Checked the sparkplugs, they were ok, a little sooty so i cleaned up and refitted, still nothing.
Checked the points in the distributor cap and rotor arm, the were a little dark so cleaned them up with a bit of scotchbrite.
Checked for spark with a spare plug and spark is present.
No smell of fuel, this i thought is odd.
Removed fuel pipe from pump and pumped a few litres through.
1st litre of petrol smelt like varnish, didnt smell very flamable and was quite a yellow colour.
2nd and 3rd litre were alot clearer and smelt more like petrol (the 3rd was in fact fresh fuel)
It occured to me that the 1st litre of fuel i had just pumped through could be 6 years old.
Contaminated fuel now removed I tried to start again, nothing.
We tried to bump start the car and nothing.
We tried to tow start the car and still nothing, not even a splutter.

Spark is there, so it must be a fueling issue.
Anyone have an idea where to start?

As usual, many thanks in advance.

First thing...is the MFI injection pump being driven by the left cam? That is, have you checked the drive belt to make sure it's there and it turns the injection pump?

Have you determined if fuel is coming out any of the injectors? Pull an injector, use care due to the high pressures at injector output and flammability. Probably use a clear glass container to catch the fuel. Once again, be careful.

Good luck.

agree with pulling injectors - maybe easier just to just unscrew the lines and leave injector in place. Watch for the little copper gaskets, they can scoot under the shroud, and if you don't have a spare handy.... :-( . And beware of sniffing for fuel for it's presence - if an MFI car isn't driven much, or hard, they can gas up the oil in short order because the disc thermostat never gets hot enough to tickle the pump to a lean mix. The oil itself can get smelling really gassy in relatively few miles, depending on how it's driven and how the MFI is set up.
