You've done a very nice job fitting the fiberglass door. What did you use to strip the glue, etc, from the interior sheet metal? What did you finish it with? Keep up the great work.

The fiberglass doors as well as the fendersand hood fit surprisingly well, I had to fabricate some +- .25 in door shims, than mill them to adjust the door gaps at the rear, top and bottom. I then trimmed the rear edge of the fender where it meets the door to make that gap consistant.

I scraped the int. soundproofing with a flat wood chisel, screw drivers putty knifes and such. I then cleaned up the excess with gel type paint remover, followed by a coarse wire wheel in a drill, on slow speed. After it was down to metal I treated the rust areas with a rust neutralizer then sanded, primed and painted with low gloss black. I'm going to leave the int. as is with felt for the headliner, dash and interior of the doors.

I'm still trying to decide on color. I did spray the door/fender area with a color called "steel blue". It has a satin/very low gloss finish. I was trying to get an idea of what it would look like on the car. I may try to darken it up a little, for my taste.

Thanks for the comments.

Robert, Flares supplied by TRE they are '69 to '73 type. I'm trying to get as close to R specs without getting too carried away.

Eric, I'm usually pretty slow on projects too. I think it was Speedo on this board that said he tried to do something every day, so I've tried to do the same. I got home early from work today and decided to tackle the cutting and welding of one of the rear fenders. It turned out nice. I'll try to post some pics later.

PBH, I'm with you on the Flat Black or Mexico Blue, I'm trying to not get too caught up in color choice, just pick a color and run with it. Suggestions are always welcome.

Matt

rear fender flares

I had a couple of hours of spare time and decided to try to cut and weld the rear fenders on my project. This is the first time for me. I had previously fit the new fender, right over the top of the old with some sheetmetal screws. I lined up the arch tops with a small level, and the sides by eye. The contour of the new fender where it met the quarter panel was near perfect. I used a Bosch jigsaw with a fine metal blade and started cutting through both fenders just above the torsion bar hole (putting long wheel base fenders on short wheel base car) I cut about 10" then came bake and tacked the new to the old.

I then continued cutting up the quarter panel, about 6" above the arch, trimming the excess material from the new fender +- 1/4" wide strip, and tack welding the seam to keep the panels flush. The blade left a nice 1/16" gap.

After I finished cutting and tack welding I removed the remaining screws and the old fender from behind the new one. I now have an early arch if someone needs one for rust repair or extreme backdating.

I cleaned up put the wheel back on and went in for a beer.

Looks like we had similar days. I just did RSR flares on my 69 today, and did virtually the exact same thing, but I had a body saw instead of a sabre saw like you had.

Check out the 4th page of this thread:

welding flares, longhood RSR, alignment questions.
