How much oil leakage is too much? Take a look:
Went for a 40 minute drive last night and put the paper uder it to see where and how much oil it was leaking. This is what it looked like this morning. I put a couple new seals in recently but they have done nothing. Mechanic said the tranny is leaking from the top and dripping down. Ive kept an eye on fluid levels and they have been alright. Is this too much oil?

The tranny leaks are the easy ones to fix. But a leak from the top is unusual. Is the vent pointed the right direction? Or is it really leaking from the side.
Yank the engine/tranny this winter and seal it up.

The tranny leak from the top could be as simple as turning the vent 180 degrees.

The engine leak looks to not be all that bad; entirely livable, actually. The transmission leak is a bit much and should be addressed, but it doesn't look exactly like panic time just yet. Couple of maybe all too obvious questions: Could it be over-filled? Is it actually coming out while driving? Sometimes a bad looking leak like this will seep out as it sits and cools down, but not so much when up to temperature and driving. The entire bottom of the engine and exhaust should be covered with transmission oil if it is leaking at this rate or worse while you are driving. Take a look next time you are out and about, like when you stop for gas, with it fully warmed up. See if you can see it actively dripping then. Or, next time you get home with it, try your paper test again, but pull it out in half an hour or so. That might tell you more about when it's happening, and the ugency for getting it fixed. Either way it's soon, just a matter of how soon. Like tomorrow, or at the end of the summer.

If that was an MG, you'd be thankin' your lucky stars that she don't leak.

Jeff,
Im sure it leaks while driving but I think its at its worst when its been up to temp and cools down in the garage. Whenever its up on a lift, I stick my finger in there and the mechanic confirms theres "plenty", even after a few large puddles like the picture. I have seen droplets come from the clutch throwout lever so I replaced the "seal" but it turns out its just a dust cover. I actually found out there is no oil inside above the lever so thats how the mechanic cam to the conclusion that it is leaking from above. |
