Looking for advice on getting a 911

OK I see that it looks as if the 87 and up 911 are the way to go due to the G50 and the 3.2... I had a 1979 in mind only due to the fact that it was fully restored and looked real nice (in the pics). Can you guys give me advice on what I should do? I mean should I hold off for a G50? I have a 2001 Audi A6 Quattro I am going to use as a trade in so I need to find a dealer to take trade... Also will need to finance what is left over. I have been looking on ebay for the most point and there is nothing real close so it will be like St Louis or Chicago or Ohio for me... I am in southern Indiana... close to Louisville KY.... I have a lot of questions so I hope you guys can help me....

One big question is.... will I be able to put booster seats in when I need to pick up my children from school? (will only need to do this till I pay off balance and get a 3rd car). I have wanted a 911 for ever and want to try and make it happen.

Please help, and if you know where one is that meets my needs tell me. Also If I were to go with the 79 would it be as reliable?

more questions to follow.

welcome to the board

the 2 basic rules of thumb are...
1....every pre-89' 911 is a 20k car...meaning if you pay 12 expect to put another 8 into it.....
2....buy the best example you can afford and be patient until you find exactly what you are looking for in a 911

and 3....ppi ppi ppi

If you trade your Audi on a 911 you'll get screwed for sure. Sell the Audi via craigslist, whatever- and get a PPI on any 911 before you buy. If you tell us how much you want to spend and what you're looking for, we can help- nice cars are out there...

Good luck,

Paul.

Well the 79 was about 14K and looks like its brand new.... (Ill try to post the pics later). I wanted to use the Audi for trade only because I was looking to get book out of it is all and I thought if I had a car that books for a lot still. I can trade it in on a 911 in the price range of 12 - 20K. My goal is to find a way to finance as less as possible and get it paid off and I need a really low monthly payment at the same time.

Any thoughts? I did see that a place on ebay has a lot of nice cars but he is in TX. his cars go for about 20-25K each.....

Thanks for the welcome

And another welcome. First tell us where you are located, put it in your profile as well.

For PPI, look at this link http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_prepurchase/911_prepurchase.htm

Like jtfreels said, if you add your location it'll help us with future posts. Just go into 'User CP' then 'User Profile' and it's under 'Additional information'. As for the car, I hate to say it, but you may be better to wait until you have more $$ available before you buy a car. That or buy an SC, which will cost less (usually) than a carrera. Are you looking for a coupe, targa or cab? If you post all the details on the '79 we can give you our thoughts- plus there may be someone local who can take a look. One more thing- make sure the PPI is done by someone with no proior knowledge of the car.

Good luck!

Paul.

The car I am looking at is a 911 SC... Its black on black, Targa top. I think it would be a good starter for me but want to bue sure its something I can really drive and not hide in a grage and work on it all the time. I want a driver not a project. It has 130+ thousand miles on it but it looks real nice... I will try to post some pics for you tonight (at work now till 6pm). My thoughts are trade the Audi to cut cost (about 14K on this one). I want to pay it off over the summer and buy another car so I can use the 911 just for enjoyment. Any other info you need on the 79?

I’ve got both a 2000 Audi A4 2.8 quattro and a 1985 911. If you can swing keeping the Audi, they’re two cars with different strengths that really complement each other. I’d guess it will be difficult to replace the Audi with anything nearly as nice for the money you’ll get for it on trade.

Doug & Julie had/have a nice SC targa for sale. Check the classifieds. As for the info on the '79, does it have a full service history? Original vs. modified? Clean carfax? Chain tensioner & popoff valve upgrades? Original paint? Headstuds all okay? There's a lot to it- but there is also a lot of good info out there.

Paul.

Paul I wish I had those answers but you know how those adds are the picks look fantastic but there isint any info on service and such??? As far as the Audi its a fantastic car, I also have a newer BMW 540... I just thought it would make it easy for me to trade it in and finance what was left but you make it sound like I would be crazy for doing so... I guess I will think it over, not sure anymore what I want to do... But I do like the car. I will take a peek at Doug and Julies car but I will need to finance no matter what and I dont know any way for me to do that unless its on a dealer lot??

thnx for all you help.

Okay. A PPI will answer the important questions. Do not buy a 911 without a PPI. Also, if you really want to borrow money, how about a home equity loan? If you buy a 911 from a dealer you will pay more. Can you post a link to the ad?

Cheers,

Paul.

Here's a nice car in Cincinnati, near Loveland.

http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail.jsp;?tracktype=usedcc&searchType=21&pageNumber=0&numResultsPerPage=50&largeNumResultsPerPage=0&sortorder=descending&sortfield=PRICE+descending&certifiedOnly=false&criteria=K-%7CE-%7CM-_41_%7CD-_386_%7CN-N%7CR-20%7CI-1%7CP-PRICE+descending%7CQ-descending%7CZ-45202&aff=cinci&paId=133892461&recnum=30&leadExists=true

IF this link is broken, go to cars.com 82 911 SC $17900. Price is high end . But its worth +/- 15000 with sound gear box and engine. Most likely you will spend another +/-5000k to bring it up to very good condition. Anymore, I'm thinking unique xterior and interior color on these old cars greatly increases prices. This is a nice one.

Someone said it "Coupes are better than Targas, and Targas are better than Cabs." I believe it, and I own a real low miles 1987 Targa, which I love. I paid 22000 at 16800 miles 1 year ago from original owner. Current price for a 1987 coupe with similar miles would be as high as mid 30's. Old 911 coupes hold their value better than Targas and Cabs because old age takes its toll on convertible top and targa top seals. Look around hard, and you will find more Cabs and Targas than Coupes. So Coupes have two things going for them; they are rare and they suffer less from leaks, and in the case of Targas, wind noise. Something to think about.

Have you driven any of them? Do the sellers agree to a PPI? (If they ay it's not necessary, walk away...)

Good luck- I hope it all works out and you have your 911 soon.

Paul.

I just never trusted car lots or buying a used car from a dealer. But, if the PPI turns out OK, then I'd consider it, if you really like the car. If you have the two other cars, why don't you sell the Audi & look for a P-car. Maybe you could set up a loan for the difference with your bank or credit union or whatever. Cash talks and makes a difference sometimes.
