915 Adjusting backlash

This part of the procedure is vague.

The manual gives:

Distance "a" = approx. 83mm

This distance references a tool that is inserted into the hub of the carrier and not the center of the carrier.

At what distance from the center of the carrier is the backlash measured (it makes a difference).

Does anyone have the tool (VW 387) and can measure from the center of the tool to the end where the dial gauge is positioned? It will probably be in the neighborhood of 91.5mm, but without the tool, I can not tell.

Thanks for your help.

John

Anyone?

Should the backlash be checked at the center of the ring gear? I can measure to that location and then transfer the distance to the outside of the trans.

According to my Carrera manual, dimension "a" (distance from differential axis to measuring point for backlash) is
80mm for Carrera
92mm for Turbo

If the backlash is measured like any other gear, it is measured at the outer edge of the gear sooo... if the ring gear has a radius of XXmm you'd measure the backlash at XXmm from the center.

Obviously, you can't get the dial indicator on the outer edge of the ring gear with the side plate bolted on so you need to make a tool to bolt to the output hub that lets you effectively measure the edge of the ring gear from outside the transmission.

Note: One transmission my friend Dave and I worked on, had some slop in splines between the hub to diff so we had to make a tool to attach right to the diff itself.

When you measure the backlash you need to immobilize the diff's internal gears (unless you have a limited slip). If you don't, when you turn the hub you will be measuring the backlash/slop in the little gears inside the diff not just the ring gear's. I seem to remember putting a rectangular magnet in the little gears to lock everything together.
(I don't know if the earlier manuals even mention this. The Carrera manual mentions using a special locking collar/bushing.)
