How do you remove the rubber on flag mirrors?

I am painting my 79 SC and have removed the stock flag mirrors.

Does anyone know how to remove the rubber surrounding the glass without breaking it? I think Rubic's cube was easier.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I'm sorry I don't have an answer to your question but I'll be removing mine to install 993 mirrors once I get them back from the body shop. Can you tell me how you removed your stock mirrors? Thanks

step 1: use a plastic putty knife to remove the mirror glass. Be careful because there might be a heating element behind it that can break along with the mirror itself.

step 2: use a nut drive to remove the power window mechanism. this may not be the case on a '79.

step 3: unscrew 3 or 4 Phillips screws to remove the mirror body from the arm. If it's power you will need to unplug a wiring harness as well.

step 4: Removing a small round plastic cover between the mirror arm and door body reveals an hex key that must be loosened (not removed... watch out parts fall into the door!) to remove the flag mirror arm from the door.

Step 5: cut the old seal to remove.

Step 6: slide the new seal over the arm and reassemble. you may need to cut a portion of the seal interior to accomplish this. If the mirror is not power then omit seal modifications and reassemble.

I hope this helps.

If you search for this, there are many threads.

Once you get the glass out, there are three screws that hold the metal body to the rubber trim.

Getting the glass out depends on which version you have. Older ones have glass that is held in with press fit pins and can be pried out.

Later ones, have an internal locking ring that is accessible through a small hole in the bottom of the rubber trim. Here is a thread that might help.

PM me if you need more info.

Once the glass is off, it's easy to see how it all disassembles. I had my mirror housing apart to paint twice in 2 months. Once because I bought a new mirror, twice because my wife put a 2 inch scratch/gouge on it a few weeks later while in the garage.

At least she felt bad. lol

Last time I tried this on my 944 I had to silicon the glass on...wasn't fun. Be careful removing the glass.

So, you can't just buy a new rubber piece? It looks like the rubber part is what contains all the guts?
