Prototipo wheel experts wanted
I have what I believe is a 70's vintage prototipo steering wheel but I'm not actually sure of it's heritage. I have not seen one like it. It doesn't say prototipo on it like most that I've seen and I'm not sure what the deal is with the '1' that is etched in the front. No numbers in the back that I can see without taking it apart further. It is flat and the stitching looks original. The horn button with the silver detail in the crest is interesting but I don't know the origin of that either.
Anyone see one like this before and have any idea about it? Many thanks, Mark ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Mark (?) - that's a nice Momo wheel but not a Prototipo.
By definition a 'Prototipo' has that word stamped/etched onto the lower spoke. Momo made a lot of similar-looking wheels in the late '60's/early '70's including the model you show in your photos above - their wheels came in 320mm/350mm/360mm/380mm diameters (& maybe more), with/without leather 'thumb spats' on the ends of 2 spokes/3 spokes or on none of them ! My particular favourite Momo wheel from this era is the 380mm 'Monza' - as fitted to my 911R-inspired car: ![]()

As Andy says, it is an early 70s MOMO. I believe the "1" is an homage to Formula 1. Looks to be in great original shape however, it looks to have been modified to fit a Corvette judging from the additional slots in the cut out for the horn button. The original MOMOs did not have those. I have an original MOMO brochure, I'll see if that one is listed.
It is technically not a Prototipo but, aside from the engraved "1" it is identical.

[/QUOTE] So does that mean that my brand new silver Prototipo purchased from our host last year isn't real? The black "Prototipo" lettering was just a decal and came off almost immediately!

Wahoofan: I believe he is referring to the older prototipo wheels. If you just bought it and it's made by Momo, it must be real.

also notice the bolt patern...
typically, Momo starts the boltpatern at 12 o-clock, then 2, 4, etc yours starts at 1, then 3, 5, etc... hey... maybe it's a prototype for the prototipo ![]()
