No more Paris-Rhones fo me, merci'

After 15 years of driving Volvos, I've developed more than a bit of impatience with really bad french parts. My 86 Carrera came with a Paris-Rhone alternator which was boiling the battery over so I got a rebuilt from Eagle Auto Electric in CA and it lasted about 15K and went out on a deserted area of I-94 between Black River Falls an Tomah WI on a Saturday night. No alternator light to warn me, I drove it until it quit, 100 miles from my destination. I just ordered a rebuilt 90A Bosch alternator which is sold as a replacement. I'm told by a mechanic that there is a factory TSB regarding a necessary wiring conversion. Anyone have this information ? Any tips would be appreciated as well, as I have already done the direct replacement that went well, it's just that the P-R didn't hold up. Hopefully, the Bosch alt will be better than that last french junk that I put in my car.

Search here under "early_s_man" and "internally regulated" for the service bulletin. This has been covered hundreds of times.

"I just ordered a rebuilt 90A Bosch alternator which is sold as a replacement."

Bosch DOESN'T have/make a 90A alternator for the 3.2 engine.
And if it's that Mickey Mouse one from Australia (incorrectly overrated @ 90A),
i.e. basically an old 55A re-designed, then buy two and carry one as a spare.

Keep those "fingers crossed" when driving!

Hmmm, I just had the same thing happen with my Paris Rhone alternator too in my '87 3.2. I can't complain as it was the original alternator and lasted for 20 years.

I ordered the Bosch replacement alternator here from pelican and was not aware of any need to change anything. This sucks as this is not spelled out on the catalog listing it as a replacement. I'll run the search for the TSB. :-(

I never heard of such and looking at the pic of that Bosch unit (that I have on order now) it looks identical to the Paris Rhone one I just took out. I did a search as suggested in this post and found zilch regarding TSB's necessary for Carreras. I ordered part #911-603-120-05-M14 that is a Bosch remanufactured 90A alternator for 84-89 911's.

Average life on these alternators is about 70k miles. Mine lasted a bit longer but thats not bad for any alternator.

Buying a rebuilt unit is no where near the same as having it overhauled locally by a good shop. Try that next time and drive for another 70k miles.
