I replaced pump on 72 911 ww pump and it doesn't run. The connectors that connect to the pump show current flowing when the washer switch is pulled but it won't turn the pump.
My old pump will work on the bench with a 1 amp rate battery charger connected to it but not the new and neither do anything when connected to the leads from the switch. Ideas? Thanks |

How did you measure the current flow? Did you use a trouble light, or a volt meter/amp meter? You may not be getting enough current to run the pump, but enough to register that power is present (light.) It seems odd that the new pump does not work on the bench and the old one does. Does the new pump turn freely? It may be defective or just something stuck in the impeller. At this point, I would suspect the switch circuit AND the new pump.

Thanks. I used a voltmeter that showed 9-10 V

Looks like low voltage to the pump. Check wiring, fuses, and voltage to other devices, as well as the ground wire. Clean all connections. This could explain the old pump not working in the car, but working on the bench. I'm still puzzled by the non-working new pump, especially on the bench test.

Problem solved. Before I checked the wiring and ground I connected both pumps directly to the battery. The old one ran - the new one didn't.
I took the impellor off the new pump to see if motor would turn. It would not. I suspect this OEM "new" pump had sat on the suppliers shelf so long that what ever lube was in it turned to stone, or ir corroded shut. From now on I will test anything right away after I get it so my return is timely. I now have a hybrid pump - old top, new bottom. Thanks for your help. |

Great to hear problem solved. It's too easy to chase down problems and wind up doing lots of unnecessary replacements. That's why this board is so helpful--the collective wisdom of thousands of hours and tens of thousands of scraped knuckles, all combined to keep alive a common passion. Available with a keystroke...

I agree. The Pelican website is AWESOME. I can't tell you how many "might be", "could be" ideas I have had that I have eliminated by doing a simple Pelican Search.
