964 engine cover spoiler

You may remember I fitted a later model engine cover
to my SC with some success and very nice it looks too.

However, I've been using another window control switch
to raise and lower it, raising spoiler isn't a problem as you can view it in reversing mirror,

closing it is done by counting to 7 Seconds which is roughly how long it needs to fold away.

My question;

what if anything can I install in-line, to register a change in current and briefly cut power to prevent damage?

You need a load-sensing switch, like power windows use to be 'one touch' up or down. It's a $35 part. Here are two links:

switch failure

smell of burning today, and a quick stop at roadside revealed a severely heated pair of wires leading from switch to spoiler,

later I cut out and spliced in new section so thats done, but curiously I checked power situation between switch/spoiler and found 12V present when key in and turned on.

further investigation revealed
window/spoiler switch in central rest position= 12V output

surely this should be nil,

I followed the diagram someone here kindly supplied
and that was months ago, surely it can't have been ON all that time
without burning out the motor/fuses

any suggestions welcome, oh and can somebody supply a schematic
of the standard window switch if possible so I can check mine

cheers
Richard

Odder and odder,

popped out the actual window switches and they all show 12v
out of the middle pins too....

must all be the same, never noticed that before

Dependencies,

When you wired your spoiler, did you ground the microswitches? I was courious because I am in the process of wiring mine as well with the Autoloc unit. In the postings that are on this BBS, it shows them grounded but I was unsure if they are grounded to the decklid or if you have to run a wire to the chassis.

I actually pulled the pair of them off and have them in a box of bits in the garage because I opted for a manual (window switch)
and count to Sevenclosing it,
check rear view mirror opening it co's I'm too idle to work out the circuit needed to use them.

how did you get on fitting the engine cover/hinges?

I got the 964 decklid & spoiler from a fellow Pelican. Then had Matt over in the used parts section modify my hinges.

I followed the diagram that Jack and others had supplied for wiring up the Autoloc but I am using a momentary switch that is not a regular window switch. It should work but my first try I only heard the autoloc buzzz and the spoiler did not move. I may have it in a bind. It was late and I stopped. I'll try again this weekend.

From what I am reading, it sounds like your window switch shorted out. That could explain why you are getting power on all connections.

If you have a multi meter, try checking for shorts.

what car have you got?

Mines an 82, and I looked at modifying the existing steel hinges but
went and bought some used 964 (tubular) ones which needed only a couple of holes re-drilling to fit cover and thats about it

The only thing I never got to grip with was the hydraulic stay
as it was simply too long to now compress short enough to allow cover to close, so instead I fashioned a rudimentary stay' which lays along the hot air plastic pipe when not in use,and clips at right angles into the rams' fixing points to hold cover up

be aware though, that my engine actually gets hot enough to affect un-protected spoiler wiring and should be shielded in the engine bay

A short of some sort I agree, but the smouldering wires only began
AFTER the switch and BEFORE the spolier, which leads me to believe theres a likely fault between front and back of car, great....

I swapped out the window/spoiler switch first of all though
just incase it was something simple, and I ususally commence with any moving part in an electrical problem anyway,

(especially the parts operated by humans) firstly

I have the a '78 SC. I could not see an easy way to make the 964 hinges work. In fact, I am not even sure I had the hinges.

Theyr'e a tubular construction and not really anything like as
space consuming as the pressed steel things my turbo lid had on.

also come to think of it, on your original grounding question\\when I removed the turbo lid there were some pretty hefty earthing straps between that and its hinges
often wondered why that was
