Fan Clearance

I have an 81 911SC and on the alt. shroud there is a small gouge from where the fan has hit it. I know the clearances are tight but what would have caused this? The passenger side clearances seem to be tighter than the driver side when looking at it closely. I originally thought maybe a bad engine mount but this would not make sense due to the alt. shroud and the fan all being connected to the engine right? Is there a way to adjust the shroud or is mine possibly a little bent?
This question may seem like a no brainer to most of you but I have to admit I am a BUICK GS gearhead that had a 1967 GS-400 since my 2nd year in college and I spent 11 years restoring it and ALL of my money! Within 3 weeks of completing the long and grueling restoration we suffered a house fire and my beautiful old BUICK was gone in 60 seconds if you will.......I was and am still heartbroken after all the hard work BUT, I have recently purchased my first Porsche which has always been my 2nd (now 1st) favorite car of all time!
So please bear with me while I get to know my new girl! She is built quite a bit different after all!
Thanks,
Frank

Look for cracks in the fan housing.

Mine 83SC is exactly the same and has been since I bought it 25,000 miles ago with no problems.

I just replaced my alternator due to bearing squeel and the bearings had gone enough to allow the fan to contact the case. I was wondering what that noise was at 2100 rpm!!
Lucky I finally changed it out before any further damage.

Check to make sure you haven't lost any nuts on the back side of the alternator bolts. Replacing mine tightened everything up....no more rubbing. More pics on the last post on this thread:
