windshield wiper not turning off

Hello all, I was wondering if anybody could help me out on this issue. I went for a ride today in my 87 targa and it began to sprinkle a bit. I was quite pleased since we are in an extreme drought here. I turned on the intermittent feature of the wipers using the little round rheostat above the spedo and the wipers turned on to the low setting there was no intermittentness about them. Turning the switch off didn't turn the wipers off either. They just kept on going. I did some experimenting and found that they would stop once I turned the car off and then turned it back on again. . Also, pulling back on the windshield washer feature of the windshield wiper switch yielded the same results, the wipers would keep on going till I turned the car off. Strangely, moving the wiper lever up to the low, medium, high and back to off positions worked, the wipers would turn off.

Pleas help if you can.
Thanks
Carl

Sounds like the intermittent relay is a likely suspect. It is behind all of the ventilation stuff in the front so it is a real pain to get at. I can't recall if you can get at the wire connection by pulling some gauges and reaching through the dash. (Anyone know off the top of their head?)

I would see if you can borrow a relay from a friend or friendly shop and give it a try to see if that is the magic bullet.
