Loud Grinding / Rattling Sound

I have an '87 3.2. It has 130,000 miles on it and has been meticulously maintained since ownership. It has been running like a finely tuned sewing machine up until now. I mean it runs OK, but the engine makes a loud grinding / rattling sound when I rev it up. What could it be and do I need to get it to the shop as soon as possible?

Sounds like a failed chain tensioner - do not start car again until this has been checked out. Tow to a professional shop if necessary.

+1 on that. Does it happen just off idle?

agree. same thing happened to me. both chain tensioners were shot. luckily, i got it taken care of before any catastrophic damage occurred. i believe you can check them out by removing the chain covers and pressing down on them. if they collapse, they're done.

Everyone,
Thanks for the feedback. I took your advice and got it towed to Eurosport. Yes, it just occurs off idle. I think it will be worth the $60.00 tow fee even if it turns out to be something else.

Lesson: even Carrera tensioners can fail.

Lesson #2: Loud or grinding noises are rarely good and usually require an immediate shutdown and tow to the shop.

Was talking to my mechanic, he said he had a car come in... could hear the grinding a block away, before he even got to the shop.

Drove it all the way from his house that way.

Tore the crap out of the engine case
