Early fog lights- what model is correct?
Had read that Hella 128's were correct for the early cars, but someone told me today that 169's were right. Which is correct for an early SWB? I'm confused!

My understanding is SWB used the 128's. From 69-73 the 169's were used. 169 is slightly larger and with a different mount, also tend to be pricier and harder to find used. Your 67 would use the 128's.

Agree with ossiblue. We make headlamp protection for 128's and 169's . Just had a customer that found a beautiful set of 128's only to find out that 169's were the proper ones for his 69 911. He is selling the NOS 128's on ebay now. Free pitch for him
I know he has a reserve but it is a reasonable one. Regards, Charles

As for the original question, SWB 68 and earlier use 128 fog lights.
Your car is a 67? if so 128. Ronnie is showing you pictures of driving lights, nice but diffrent topic, If he had fog lights he would use the 169's and of course they can also be on the same car. |

If you wish to see these lights in person, you better get here quick. The car's next owner is in my garage, learning how I wash/wax it, etc. All the books and records are packed in his excess airline baggage, and the car will soon be leaving here for it's new home in Istanbul. FOG LIGHTS THEY ARE!

ficke? Beware of making definitive statements unless you are sure. You see, there are archives, people do searches, and some consider this trivial stuff important if they are restoring a car...Hell, I've overheard self proclaimed experts arguing about bolt heads markings. But on this one unimportant subject...I do know. I'm being definitive. The FOG light pics Ron posted are legit, and are pics of what are original lights. So, if you're not sure? Begin with, "I dunno, but I THINK it was this way"...
Really, in the grand scheme of things? How important are fog lights??? ![]()

So now I'm a little confused. I have a 1971 E that has fog lights. (below the bumper, not through the grill) I need to replace mine. The current lights are 1980's black plasic bosch units. What is the correct Hella type?
Thanks, Gavin

I dunno...(see? It's easy!) but I THINK that the lower bumper lights were used on pre 1972 street cars...most of the photos I've seen of pre 1972 cars with through the grille lights were rally or endurance race cars. Once the 911S front bumper "spoiler" appeared in 1972, the factory street car lights were moved up to thru the grille mounting.
I'm talking street cars here...cars done for "sports purposes" were quite different, and looking at old rally and race photos shows a wide variety of lights and mounts. Warning: I'm doing a lot of guess work here...just based on memory of what I've seen, a guy who bought his first Porsche back in 1966.

Gavin,
Here are a pair of 169's on my old long hood. Period correct although they weren't imported into the US on cars of this year (1969). ![]()

Nice pic, Ossi. Yes, I do THINK the fog lites mounting point had a lot to do with the bumper style of the individual car. The "S" spoiler bumper first appeared in 1972...standard on the S model, optional on T's and E's...so, during the '72-'73 model years, I recall seeing cars running fogs in either location, depending on the front bumper style.
During that time period, I wasn't overly concerned over whether the factory installed the lights or not... ![]()

The 169 (which is a misnomer by the way) is the correct under bumper light for ROW from 69-72 either in clear or amber. Like mine:
