Shift linkage again
I've been scanning post for an hour now, but I still have an issue. I have a freshly rebuilt 915, no more than 15 miles on it. When I put it and it's rebuilt engine in, I just put the pin back in the shift coupler and went about thing.
I had every gear at first, but third was a POS to find, so I went though the standard adjustment procedure. Neutral, then center and to the left. After that it went to hell, somehow my SIEN shifter plate became bent, in fact I had to take it out it was bent so far to the right. After removing that, still issues. I finally found first gear, and I held the thing up and right while I adjusted the coupler in the rear, per the 101 book. Problem is that the shifter returns to center once I let go. Then if I put in any upper gear it just pops out. 1st is third, 4th is reverse. These were issues before I had the gearbox rebuilt as well, but I had "tuned" them out with coupler. Long post I know, but anyone have some advice here?

I think you will find that adjusting the shift linkage is easier without the spring tension provided by any spring-loaded shifter attachment, Seine's Gate Shift kit included.

Trust me, it was clocked all the way over, I use my right leg to hold it in place. I'm not sure what's going on here. I'm positive I'm in neutral because I can let the clutch out. I found first once, but I can't find it again.

Scott,
Can you find second and fourth easily? The coupler may be on the shaft too deep, limiting the fore - aft motion of the gear levers.

OK, here is what I did, went back to zero and found that the coupler was two "clicks" (audiable) to the drivers side. I "clicked" it back and set it on the neutral plane. I have all the gears now, however 1st and 3rd can still be mistaken very easily.
BTW: on a side note, a fresh 915 is a dream, I can shift to 1st from a roll no problem. And my 1st to second feels like a normal car. Why I didn't have the gear box rebuilt early on I'll never know.

I'm bumping my own thread, if I remove the shift boot I can shift fine. after I re-install that rubber POS it messes everything up. I can only guess that it shrank while it was sitting for the last year. I think I'll go to the fabric store and make a leather one.

Well the shifter finally gave up, it turned out to be the shift rod in the tunnel. The part at the end where it reduces down to fit in the cup socket was lose, I could rotate it 360 deg. It looks from other posts that this is common, and judging by the factory welds I'm not surprised that it gave out.
Anyway, I jacked the transmission up and slid the rod out, then I seam welded it instead of the rosette welds that the factory used. Shifts like my wifes A4 now, thank god for the archives
