Whew, that was a lot of work!

My makeshift polishing station below. Started with the wire wheel on the fins......mine were fairly pitted. Then 320 to 600 grit wet paper using WD40 followed by tripoli and white polishing compounds. Finished with mothers.

I had a polished fan...
and then the realities of magnesium combined with oxygen in the atmosphere reared its ugly head...

Now I would hit it with the Gibbs penetrant. http://www.roadsters.com/gibbs/ It will make it darker but it will also make the polish last.

Just got done with mine will post pics tomorrow. I also cleaned the fan housing. I used some simichrome on the fan and housing don't know if that will help protect or not. Mine were painted a couple years ago. The paint really gets in the poors of the metal was a pain to get clean. I used up 6 dremel wire brushes. I also cleaned (scotch brite wheel) the stainless heat exchangers. With the Fabspeed cat the HEs and the polished fan If I can't catch them with speed I will just blind them with the flash then pass while their eyes are closed. Ha....

Easy to use. It should be a done deal for everyone.
It's almost like shooting WD in pia areas to rejuce the fan of the original shine. It's not a polish it's a preservative and easy to use. + There is no sharp cut from ok to FU as it weakens.


I've seen that happen.





ps: It doesn't leave as much of the mirror as concours products but it lasts just as long if not longer and concours is a lot more work..... all imo

I did mine,and after a month it became gray again. But a friend of mine put future floor wax on the fan and housing,and after a few years it's still very nice.

Interesting. Future is near-universally used by serious scale modelers (my winter hobby...) as a sprayed-on coating over the airbrused paint that makes much of the difference between a true display model and a toy. Future, it turns out, is nothing but pure, colorless, very tough acrylic.

I just got some Gibbs last week after seeing it mentioned on the engine thread above. The stuff works great. Unlike any other product I've tried. I use it on my Ti road bike too. I doubt I'll be without it from now on.

Dfink, nice work! How did you get into the groves on the outside of the fan housing? I started to do mine but one of the alternater bolts broke so I'll do it later.

The little 1" stainless wire brushes in a dremel drill with a flex shaft. It wound up taking 6 of them to get it done. A very small grinding stone will then get into the left over corners. The process would be easier if it had never been painted. Even the application of the simichrome polish dulled the finish. I didn't get quite the finish that you did under the assumption that it wouldn't last anyhow. I think I will order some of the gibbs and just hit it all with that.
I have thought about shining up the upper valve covers also. For the love of God I must get my engine parts back so I quit doing this.

Has anyone tried using the acid type wheel cleaner they used to sell (do they still?) for cast finish wheels? Probably as a first treatment to remove all the gunk from the fan and housing?
