Yet another RS 30 Clone

OK, With all of these threads about RS 30 Clones I thought it is time I send in a pair of updated pictures. I finally have the front and rear bumpers installed. I just completed the valve adjustment and some other minor repairs. This weekend I am rebuilding the carbs and if all goes as planned it will be running soon.

If any of you are in the Chicago area and bored, you are more than welcome to come and wrench a while.

Hey Keith, That looks good. I am planning a conversion myself (not RS 3.0).

I'm in the Chicago area too, but I have enough wrenching of my own for the moment. I still would like to come by and check out the car. Perhaps it will inspire me to take my conversion in a different path.

Later...got to head home now or I'll get no dinner.

Hey Keith,
I had a '62 Corvair before my Pcar. In fact, the Monza was faster and handled a lot better than the Porsche (I autocrossed it). The Porsche was as no-optioned as one could get. Let me list what it had (or didn't have) when I first got it:

- 165-15 tires on 5.5 (?) x 15" chrome wheels
- No front sway bar
- No rear sway bar
- 4-speed trans.
- T engine - the lowest stressed (and otherwise) engine Porsche ever made (however, it made it to 150,000 before the rubber chain ramps did it in)
- Stock ride height +

Tell us about the '64.

Sherwood Lee

OK a little off topic but here is the info on the Corvair

I started out with the Corvair about 10 years ago. I had been doing a few things on and off for performance. It is one of those “High Velocity, Low Speed” cars. It feels like you’re flying and when you look at the speedometer you’re doing 65. This makes for a safe combination since I always feeling like I am going faster than I really am. The car handles quite good for what it was designed to be. I put 60 series tires on it last year (195/63-13 front and 205/60-13 rear) and that was the biggest improvement I could have ever made. I have another motor that I keep debating if I should install it. The car works so I just drive it. I also have a conversion for front disc brakes which have been sitting on the shelf for a year waiting to be installed.

I attached a shot of the engine that is in it.

Here are the modifications I have done, Stock measurement with G-Tech 0-60 15.1

1. Pertronix Ignition Module, 8MM Wires
2. Accell 50K Coil (needed to remove resistor)
3. Plugs NGK gapped .045
4. Early Chevy Advance curve kit installed Static timing 12 degrees full advance 32 in by 2400 RPM
5. Otto variable pulley running at the 1.32:1 setting
6. Headers with dual mufflers
7. Clarks/Otto 4X1 kit. Primary carbs 52 jets, secondary carbs bored venturi with 52 jets.
8. Tires are 195/60-13 front 205/60-13 rear.
9. Offenhauser oil pan with deep sump pick up. No real gain other than the additional 10HP that Chrome gives. GGGGG.....

In this condition the car ran the 0-60 in 8.7

Since then I have removed the headers and went back to dual exhaust. I live in the SW side of Chicago and I wanted some heat for my fall enjoyment. I also needed to change out the fan bearing so now I do not have the Otto pulley on. In this condition the g-tech shows 0-60 in 10.1

One can argue the accuracy of the G-Tech but it does show the level of improvement due to the changes I made. I still cannot outrun MiniVans but it is an enjoyable car to drive.

About this time, Rich (aka Rich911E), came across the 911 and offered it to me. That was just about a year ago. Due to personal issues the 911 ended up sitting longer than either of us wanted but it should be on the road soon.

Souk

Let me know if you are in the area, I live in Darien. I see me carb kits showed up today so I plan to be doing the carb rebuild this weekend.

Keith,

Darien! My office is in Woodridge, right next door! I was "this" close to gettting a Covair one summer. I was spending the summer in Park City, and a guy had a project that needed completion. Dang! Wish I had been less poor then.

I'll have to cruise over one day and take a look see.

Let me know when you are free to give me a tour of both cars.

Corvair Spyder...

Wasn't there a model of Corvair they called their Spyder. It was their, ( Chevys) "S" version. I had a cousin who had a maroon colored one and I remember the gear shift knob being white. Interesting, but my mom had a 4-door Corvair with 4 - speed. Boy she would drive the heck out of that little car. We were so happy when Moms traded that thing in for a "66" 2 door Impala and automatic tranny....Jeez, "those were the days".......

The Spyder 'option' started in 1962 and was a 150HP turbocharged, 4-speed car with numerous other upgrades. It continued under the name Spyder through 1964. In 1965 is became known as the CORSA and could be had with the 140HP four carb setup or the 180HP Turbo setup.

While they are not the 10's I do have 15x8's but due to tire choice I went with the more moder turbo wheels.

What happened to the torsion bar holes and covers? Did you cut the lower radius out and will they remain open like that, just curious? Looks good.

The car looks terrific, but the modern wheels look out of place. Best to find something period correct...even Fikses would look better. I've never been a fan of the modern twist wheels.

Great job on the car!

I have not been able to find any torsion bar covers to fit. I am going to fab up some soon.

When I first put the twists on it I did not care for the looks. However after driving the car with the tires I was sold. The 15's I have had 225/55-15 and 245/50-15. With the twists I have 225/40-17 and 265/35-17. The additional tread and a light weight car make for fun corners.

philippeF:

Nice pic you show...but realize that the car pictured is an earlier, long hood 2.8 RSR ( street version of that time was a 2.7 RS)...and the short hood car we're talking about in this thread is a 3.0 RS.

Small point, maybe.....
