915 Transmission question

My 915 transmission is beig rebuilt and we noticed that the 2nd gear set numbers do not match is there any reason I should not continue to use these gears?

Thanks Doug

the hand written numbers are supposed to match. if by some miracle the gears were quiet and there isn't any galling, you may as well continue using them.

Thanks I do not remember any extra noise but my race car is very loud and with balacava, ear plugs and helmet it would be a bit hard to decifer if there is more noise than the other gears. I will check for galling. Doug

The reason that early model gears were numbered, was due to the need to spin and match them up for complete clearance and quietness. If you are not concerned about the additional noise you should be fine, but check to make sure that the gears are wearing evenly. If it looks like you are losing material you may want to consider finding a new set. There are several companies, as I am sure that you are aware that can help you with that, but if you have any problems let me know and I will be happy to help you.

Hope this helps.

Porsche also specifies normal “backlash” for the gear-pairs and a “wear limit”.

For your 915, the backlash is 0.06 – 0.12 mm with a wear limit of 0.22 mm. This is measured at the tooth face of the free gear with the fixed gear shaft secured.

Best,
Grady

Porsche has discontinued the practice of matching & numbering the gear pair, and in fact happily sells half-sets (idler only) for their newer transmissions. The numbering was a formality more than anything, to help a shop who has two or more of the same transmission type in for repair. In other words, gear pairs aren't lapped together like R&P sets are.
