Should I Install My Polished Aluminum License Panel

Almost $500 later I have a polished aluminum license panel. I am having trouble figuring out what to do. Here are my options:

Install it:
pros- Looks amazing, very high luster, unique as can be, I spent a ton on polishing so I might as well enjoy it, its laquered so I don't have to repolish it

cons- someone hitting it would be tragic, it looks amazing on my shelf!, someone hitting it would be tragic, oh did I mention I spent a ton of money on it and someone hitting it would be tragic.

Don't Install it:
pros- I could sell it to someone who would enjoy it, I already have a good license panel on the car,

cons- Its lighter and won't get used, its actually a ton lighter than the steel one so that is always a plus on a tail heavy SWB 901.

Help me out guys, what should I do?

I'd use it to save in when I get up in the morning. If you are worried about it don't put it on the car.

You got it so put it on and enjoy it. If someone hits you then I hope that's the biggest problem you have.

The other down side of putting it on is that the headlights reflecting off it will blind the driver following and he will run into the back of you.

Send it to me and I can dull it for you so it can be safely used.

Bob- haha. Yeah its very nicely done and thats why the polishing cost so much. Infact I saved some money by not having them polish where the bumpers go on the side. It is seriously beautiful.

EarlyPorsche,

Paint it as original. Only you will know what is there. Very satisfying personally. No one will steal it. The reflection won’t blind the people behind.

There are lots of little Porsche features that are very desirable and don’t need to be public. It is difficult to disguise Fuchs (probably the best manufactured wheel ever). There are all sorts of very important parts we have on our 911s. Enjoy knowing you have something special. You don’t need to advertise.

Do you have an aluminum deck lid?

There is a lot more under the skin that makes a “wolf in sheep’s clothing” for your satisfaction. I am very much in favor of that, just as being able to return every detail to original someday.

Best,
Grady

Well I have a painted one on there and honestly this piece is too beautiful for me to install on my car. I think I will sell it, spending almost $500 on it said and done wasn't too smart but hopefully I can recoup some of my costs. As of now its for sale. Let me know if you are interested. $350 shipped or best offer would buy it at this point.

Put it on and try it out. You can always get another one and paint it if you don't like it.

Moon Polished

This panel is beautiful. I say do with it what you see fit.

But I remember years ago, as a teen, yes in the early 70's that some 911s in SOCAL were running around with the center panel moon polished. At the time I thought it looked cool and very technical. Anyone out there see such a thing? or is my memory playing tricks on me again?

Original or repro? The top mounting tabs look like they are missing??? How would you mount it?

It does look nice. What kind of clear did you shoot it with? I'd be afraid of it yellowing with the heat back there. I think I'd like the look if the engine lid were alum and polished as well. Kind of neat with the grey. Finish it up with a polished alum front hood.

Then get a set of industrial sunglasses Heck the glare off the rear might keep those jokers from tailgating.

Why stop at the license plate panel?

A fully polished 911 would look awesome and probably one of a kind unless it catches on with the folks here.

PS: check for Bondo first

Haha, thanks guys, I really didn't think it would be a hit, I thought I would be the only person that would like it. I don't think I will be installing it and it is officially for sale, but I am glad it gets warm comments.
