Sport Muffler with megaphone outlet pipes -- anybody tried this?
I searched the archives for information on the sport muffler and it seems that everyone likes it but it is noisy, but they all lust for the sound and look of megaphones. I think the megaphones look pretty cool, but running them on the street would be too much.
As a compromise, I was thinking of putting megaphones as the exit pipes for the sport muffler so it looks like a racing megaphone exhaust from the rear but it still (technically) has a muffler. I have an old sport muffler (which I agree is pretty noisy) and a pair of megaphones with the diffusers like the early race cars. I would bet that it would increase the noise a bit and I don't expect any increase in power with the megaphones being after the mufflers, but I was thinking it might look pretty cool. Before I do the cutting and welding, I was wondering if anyone had tried this already. If so, what was the result (i.e. was it unbearably noisy) and do you have a picture of the result? Second, do people agree this would look cool or "rice"? Thanks, Rich

Rich,
I think Warren posted that the length of the pipes on the sport muff are tuned for best performance. When I shortened the pipes on my ex car to about 7", it felt less "torquie." It did look better though. Mark |

I put the Sport muffler on my SC last week and think the pipes are a little long. I was planning to cut them down two inches. Did you notice an increase in noise with the pipes cut shorter?

Hey Paul,
It actually mellowed the sound a little. Less of a pop and more smooth. As I remember, it may have been a touch more quiet. Mark |

As far as looks go, yes it will look racy. Unless you install them at a slight upward angle, you might run into some driveway clearance issues. Apparently, a straight pipes can be "tuned" (for noise) by shortening the tip. With megaphones, cleanly slicing the tip is a little trickier. Make it neat.

I saw a car a while back (early 90's) that had an interesting set up. It was a sport muffler with three outputs. Two in the near center, straight back, and a typical left side exit. All outputs had fittings on them so they could be closed off. Cap the center ones for street use and the left one for the track. Iam almost certain that the factory has made something similar. I think I have seen a picture of it somewhere..........???

Thanks for the photos and the comments. I think I'll give it a try since I doubt I'll use the straight out megaphones in the age of noise controlled events. I'll take a look at Bruce Anderson's book for the old rally car pictures especially since that was the look I was trying to achieve.

i have all three muffler types. the stock, sport and megas. i run the megas on the race track and the sport for touring club events. for everyday, i like the stock muffler. i rather here my music - although the 3.0 twin plug motor with megas is music through a helmet, it gets tiring after a while. so if you like it load... go for it.

Here is what I came up with. I cut down 2" off the sport two out exhaust, added some chrome exhaust covers, and painted the muffler black to blend in. Not too loud. A little more torque in the upper RPMS, with no noticable difference i nthe low end.

Hey Paul,
Where did you get the chrome slip-ons? How long are they? I have been looking for something like that for ever for mine. Paul ![]()

Here's what I did for my car. I used a regular sport muffler and had the regular side tip rewelded back on. I then had two aluminum caps made with a through bolt to keep them on.
See my pelican gallery for a pic of the cap itself.

Pipe length
So is it safe to assume the longer the pipes are on the sport exhaust, the better the torque?
I'm looking at Paul Thomas' car -- those pipes are pretty long, but does their length improve torque? I've got some steep driveways to negotiate and can just imagine that giant rearward grinding sound, but if torque is the benefit, I might bite the bullet nonetheless. A second question: the pipes are welded to the muffler, no? So if one bends the pipes, they're SOL as far as replacing just the bent pipe - the whole muffler unit has to be replaced, right? Thanks.

CamB, With the caps on, it sounds almost like a stock muffler, but removing them leads to a deap, throaty growl. The uncapped configuration is very addicting, but does attract attention... the wrong kind of attention.
DD74, I got tired of hearing my pipes scrape driveways, speed bumps and tripping over them in my tight garage, so I cut them flush with my bumper. I took about 6-8 inches off the pipes and didn't feel any performance change. What I did notice was an increase in sound (notice I didn't say noise as I love the sound). I think DB levels are controled by the lengh and that it all. YMMV,

My roommate and I attached a set of megaphones to his 72 "T" over the summer. For those of you who have never heard this sound, it's worth the expense even if you only do it once. I cannot possibly put into words how hard we were laughing at the sound of even a mild "T" motor with the racing megaphones bolted to the heat exchangers. There is nothing like the sound of a 911 engine at full song on the highway at speed. My roommate had to drive in the slow lane because the reverb off the concrete barriers was too much for his ears to tolerate in the fast lane!
It was a fun couple of days. We took it to an autocross like that. I think some people there enjoyed it less than we did.
