Seat repair - aka: "Man, what a pain in the butt..."

My driver's seat was coming unstitched on the right side seam on bottom cushion. Came to me that way. Over time, it had unravelled from the front to the rear. I finally decided to try my hand at fixing it. Geeze what pain in the rear, or at least the hand and fingers. They still hurt.

I took my seat out and removed the seat rails. Then I carefully removed the hog rings on the rear flap. Next I carefully lifted the cleverly placed factory seat skin "holder-downers" - nice touch as I had not seen a seat done like that before. Got to be careful with these as they can break off if you manhandle them too much. You need to bend them backwards slightly for ease of skin removal over them. Carefully lift the seat skin over the tabs just spoken of. Check the bottom of the cushion, as it may still have factory hog rings attaching it to the metal frame. Once those are removed, carefully remove the seat cushion from the frame. This is where my REAL work began. I had to carefully flip up one side of the skin so I could access the damaged area. Then, I had to carefully restitch the area about 1 cm per stitch - using the original holes from machine sewing from factory. I used a waxed thread, as I thought it would hold better being that it was a repair. I ended up just having to whip stitch mine, as trying to replicate factory machine stitch pattern was going to take FOREVER! Finally got done 2 hours later and reinstalled everything. Man, wife was even impressed. Ha ! It is not perfect but a decent holdover, and frankly, just fine for a daily driver. I will post pics tomorrow if anyone is interested. It is a PAIN, but looks SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better now.

Sweet. I had recently taken my seat out and started to take it apart for a different reason. They way they hold the skin down is interesting. Looking forward to seeing your handywork with that patch.

Stitching up two unraveled seams on my driver's seat was the first repair I took on shortly after buying my SC. Although, I should clarify because it was my lovely and adoring wife who painstakingly stitched the seams using the same holes. That was almost three years ago, and every now and again she uses her graciousness as leverage. She has also let me know that she will never take on that task again.

pics finally...

crazy week. Finally got around to shoot a couple of pics of the repaired seat. I wish I had a good before photo, but just picture "if you will", a seat bottom that has the entire right seam separated from front to rear.

Like I said before, it is not perfect, but certainly good enough for daily driving. But, good grief, my finger tips are still a bit sore!

Now I have to figure out how to fix this one!

Nice reapair! Looks great.

I had to do the same thing to my passenger seat this winter. Drivers side was too far gone so I had to recover.

Maybe some small curved needles for the headrest? It would take some time and patience, but I bet it could be done. Know any surgeons?
