Need "Speedster style" parts and ideas
I've been drooling over the chopped top look of the early 90s 911 Speedsters.....anyone know where an aftermarket Speedster front wind screen can be purchased and what's involved in modifying the my cabriolet top to fit?
I have an 83 cab with a 3.6 and it has the long hood mods......I want to take it to a further level so that I'll NEVER get what I have invested in it on resale.... ![]() dC Auto has a new set of clamshells....$3500....yikes....I may just keep the tonneau cover and I have a glass top that can be sectioned....

This doesn't answer your question Mike...but I love the thread.
I went to the Steet Rod Nationals last week and went to a Ron Covell seminar and now I need to start on a all aluminum hard top from my speedster. I have been wanting a light hard top for the speedster but nothing is really available except the fiberglass stuff. I would like to hear more about the way a stock cab top could be remade into a low slung speedster top.

Mikez,
If you can locate a 89 speedster windshield, Porsche may still have them, you can use the 89 sub-dash and cowl to mount the windshield with the 4 bolts as was done stock. The sub-dash and cowl are still available from Porsche. One of the fiberglass suppliers still has the clamshell listed, I will look and see if I can find it. Here are some shots of the install on my Speedster project. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

i have a 94 speedster clamshell hinge assembly and new visors. i got my clamshell from anziano's bad boys cars in santa ana. my old strosek style hardtop, like the one in the picture, may be available from the guy that owns my car now.

If good 3.0/3.2 cabrios are going for $15k (there are a lot for sale) how much would it cost to convert them into speedsters? Windshield, clam cover, and top? Time and labor to do this? Can it be done for $12K? Since the real ones are too pricey.....

I've been studying the art of metal working for a few years now and I'm able to do some fundamental projects. You will see a thread in the next day or two where I helped convert a 915 car to a G50 car. But, the hand forming I've done only makes me appreciate what Ron C. and the rest of those heroes can do. I can say that 37 years as a carpenter has been helpful in understanding layout. Mike, you and I are kindred spirits. Go, man. |

When I'm done I'll tell you. My 83 is a grey market ROW.....it's been Federalized twice to Texas and CA standards. The A/C sucked so badly I tossed it and it has no heat either.......it's not a Concour candidate in other words.
But it looks gud and pissesoffthe blue hairs in my 'hood.....

$12k would probably cover it. I think the 94 windshield - $2500 is much easier to use as the mounting is simpler. The top and clamshell- $7000 are a simple bolt on. I think the thing that most people try to convert but shouldn't are the doors- $2000. The differences look minor but they aren't. You are much better off starting with real complete Speedster doors if you can find them.

Most of the panels I have hand formed over the last 23 years were for street rods. I am also lucky to have the help of a good friend from Italy that has worked as a panel beater for over 35 years on F cars and street rods here in the US. Maybe some of my machinist and CNC skills will help me to produce a nice part. If I don't make it right the first time, then it's time to recycle my scraps into the aluminum can pile. ![]()

I second that the -94 windshield should be easier.
When I had mine done - or should I say the reason why I had mine done - was that I got hold of a complete crashed -94 speedster with both doors intact and all the sheetmetal Moneywise I regret the whole thing - but it got me a really unique 911 ![]()
