Petronix ignitor problem

I purchased a new petronix ignitor for my 77' 911s and installed it today. Prior to installation I searched this forum for installation instructions and found that the installation was different from the 914 that I had installed one on prior to this one. The difference I understood was with the cid unit. As per instructions I have attached the black wire to where the points attached to, and I ran the red wire to a 12v point in the engine compartment that was turned on by the key. Needless to say After the installation I have a car that now doesn't run.... I gapped the ignitor with the piece of plastic supplies. all connections are good and tight.. any suggestions......

The following is based on my similar experience and assuming the following:
The distributor has not been removed and timing not significantly altered.

Double check the red is in fact getting power with ignition on. If you spliced into an existing wire, check the splice/connector is secure. Did you test the connection with a test light or meter? With ignition on/off?

Try attaching the black wire directly to ground, like to a bolt in the case.
Double check the gap (as you did).

If it still doesn't work check to see if you get spark at the plugs.

If all this fails, try reinstalling your points and see if she fires.

I was a frustrated as you, but after doing the above, the Petronix has worked flawlessly. (BTW, my problem was a combination of a poor ground--black wire--and a careless removal of the distributor to install the ignitor, thus the assumption mentioned at the start.)

What happened is this.... I was installing new shift bushings yesterday and had noticed a toggle switch in an area under the dash and couldn't figure out what it was. I remembered this and figured that it must be a ignition toggle switch for security reasons that the PO had installed... I just went outside found and flipped the switch and Wahla...... I feel like a dufuss so please ignore this post.....

What a great response! Believe me, we've all been there. It's just good to hear the problem wasn't a problem at all. I think you'll love the Petronix.
