New issue! Head stud bolt missing, Help!

Just one I think I getting somewhere..... I get the RSR seals installed and figure I should check the torque on the heads. They were all very loose. Ok, I will tighten them. One is missing the "bolt" that you are suppose to torque! What a hack engine builder!

Can I just buy a new "allen bolt" and torque it on? Should I remove them all and put lock tight on them? They all snugged up and feel tight (24 ft lbs). I sure Pelican sells them... Man! This is getting crazy!

Thanks for the rant. Any help would be appreciated.

If the head stud is missing, put one in. If it's broken well, that's another story. I am assuming that you didn't find the stud laying in the cover when you took it off. Hopefully the builder didn't notice that they didn't put one in. I can't imagine them finding an extra stud and not wondering "gee where does this go?"

On a side note, I don't know all the details on your car but I wouldn't go torquing those studs too much. If they are snug, let sleeping dogs lie. Do a search.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately they were all loose. I'm guessing 15-18 lbs. I hear you on not overdoing it on the studs. I am shocked this guy would not put a bolt on it. I wonder if something's wrong with the head stud.

Just to be clear: is there a threaded stud but no nut on the end or is there no stud at all? Also, are you sure on the 24 lbs torque?

Hey Jim,

To be clear, these are not allen bolts. They are threaded studs screwed into the case and locked in place with Locktite.

The squeeze on the heads is done with a blind allen nut on top of a special washer and is torqued to spec.

Sorry, you are corret. They are the allen nut. I need one. I looked at the parts on Pelican tonight. I think the one I need is this one 901-104-382-02-M260. It is $4.75. Correct?

Thanks

Is this a freshly built engine? Or one that has been running? If it's an engine that's been running, was it leaking badly at the cylinder base? Any head to cylinder seal issues (visible?) What engine is it?

It's probably not going to cause your engine to grenade, as some engines will run for a long time with a broken head stud...and the owner doesn't know about it.

I was told the engine was rebuilt only 400 miles ago. I don't think that is the case but it is pretty clean inside. When I wipped down the rocker shafts I saw moly lube residue. I also was present when I changed the oil. The car was leaking pretty bad at the oil baffle deflectors and the center of the engine. I was also leaking at the heat exchanger base where it mounts to the head. This is a photo after I power washed the engine and ran it for 15 minutes. I also have put the RSR seals on the rocker shafts and aligned them properly since this photo.
