P-car parts numbering system?
 

Anyone have any insight as to the rational that went into the 11 character numbering system Porsche uses for its parts?

I know the first 3 reference the engineering project unless they get into generics with 999's or something.
Next 3 looks like assembly of use.
Next 3 ?
Last 2 are the revision number?

I was hoping that the numbers would be tranlsate-able like a vin.

Well yes, the part numbers can be decoded somewhat.
The first three digits are essentially project numbers like you supposed.
The next three are related to the group and subgroups just like the service manual.
The next three are sequential, but with right and left as even/odd where required.
The last two are revisions or variations as required.

It's a kick back from the old VW days they and Audi use the same nine digit system

my son is involved in setting up the numbering system in a start-up company,and we are trying not to re-invent the wheel.

someone had a lot of foresight to structure the Porsche system they they did.
