Clutch pedal play

I have a 1986 911 with a recently rebuilt engine and new clutch (approx 2000 miles ago). My clutch pedal has about 1-1.5 inches of slack or play before it starts to disengage the clutch. It feels like there is 2 stages to the clutching motion. One to deal with teh play or slack and another when it actual statrts to disengage the clutch. The same is true for engaging the clutch. The Is this normal?? Shifting, although tempermental at times seems normal. After dropping the dollars on a rebuild perhaps I am just paranoid.

Please clarify that a bit. Is the play you describe mean there is NO tension on the pedal? You should feel some resistance. If you have excessive free play you either need to adjust the cable or replace it. When you did the clutch was a new cable installed? Check the spring at the tranny as well to make sure it isn't broken.

There is no tension, it is almost like I push the pedal down about 1.5 inches and then It feels like I hit some tension and the clutch starts to disengage. I would need to check however I do not believe a new clutch cable was installed unless it is part of an item called a "clutch kit". I will have to check with the shop that did the work.

There is so much going on. Cable is one, and is easier. The pedal box is another and much harder.

Thaxtela,

Interesting I have the same issue with my '85 Targa. Clutch replaced prior to my recent purchase.

The cable is not part of the clutch kit. The problem is probably something external, meaning the clutch should not have to disassembled again (hopefully). You need to have this looked at.

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the advice. I will attempt to adjust the cable tomorrow as per repair manual. If this does not fix it I will take it to the repair shop.
