airbox mod

I was just wondering if rather than cutting the cover, has anyone simply experimented with just leaving the entire cover off and duct taping the filter in? Only reason I'm thinking of doing this is because I have some adjusting and testing to do on my car which will require me to pull the AFM and airbox cover in and out several times. It would seem to me that the easiest way to do this would be to leave the cover off, duct tape the filter in, and leave the fastners on the inner part of the air box off. This way I only have to undo one hoseclamp and the whole afm and inner box will come out quite easily, rather than having to remove the cover and/or undo the nuts every single time.

Anyway, I was wondering if it could be a semi-permanent solution as well or if anyone has tried it. Seems to me like something a raciing team might do but I don't race so I have no clue. Even if it is only temporary, at least I would be able to hear what the air box mod (cutting away the top portion of the cover) might sound like by having the filter duct taped in and no cover....

I've seen someone who used large plastic tie-wraps to attach the air filter to the airbox and then left the cover off... that might work for you...

hi azasadny, thanks for the tip. do you know how the ties were attached? did they drill through the air filter and cover to get the wraps through or did they just somehow tie wrap the corners so no drilling necessary?

I've seen several pix of guys just cross -attaching the OEM bungie straps >> a big "x".. keeps the air filter in place

Here's how I run mine.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1186019656.jpg

I experimented with this a while back. Here is everything you've ever wanted to know about airbox covers.

Yes, you can run just the air filter, you can also cut the top off like I did and run the bottom of the cover as a frame that holds the filter tight against the airbox with the stock straps. I thought this solution looked very cool.

2 problems with this that you should know about though. First, if it rains, water can make its way into the throttle body. Second, the bottleneck for air entering the engine isn't the filter, its the throttle body behind the filter. The filter actually has a lot of surface area to it.

So, there won't be any noticeable difference in performance when you alter the air box cover but there is still a lot of mythology out there around air box covers. You can achieve a different sound by altering the cover and some people do like this sucking sound. Adds to the drama.

I purchased a larger throttle body from SCarGo years ago, that might be another path for people looking to improve this area.

Lastly, if you still want to alter the cover but avoid problems on rainy days you can drill a series of one inch holes along the bottom of the cover right above the lip. This lets in more air but keeps the filter out of the path of any rain.

I've run this "modification" for several years without a problem. Again, the benefits are mostly in your mind but hey, if your having fun who cares.

Oh,Haha, since I'm dispensing unsolicited advice this evening if you wanted another option to the tubing your running across the top of your engine you can do a search under backdating the heat.

You can purchase the parts on the parts lists you'll find used and you could eliminate almost all of that tubing. You'll be much happier with the results as you'll have more room to work and your heat will be better as well.

Okay, my work is done here.

I went down the route of "topless" airbox aswell. Picked up a spare off ebay and went to work with the jigsaw mimicking the fabspeed one. I left as much at the top as I could to act as a bit of a rain lip, I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out, and does free up a bit of space in the engine bay.

I too simply bought a used lid, and cut it up. It offers no more power, but I like the sound.

I don't get it....

I did the mod that Javers and Capt. Carrera did....section the lid to have only a 1" wide band left. This leaves the 4 clips very easily accessible and takes what?....3/4 or fully 1 minute to unfasten? Ductape? Ductape?

hahahahahahahahaha

+10 hp....

hahhahahahahaahaha

You know, one could make a frame out of some 1/2" pine wood in about 5 minutes for less than $5... and the K&N...

FYI spoke with a pretty fast F stock guy running an ROW SC... tested K&N vs stock on the local dyno... K&N lost 6 hp so he did the test again ... same ... he tells all his F stock buddies to run K&Ns :) YRMV (Your Results May Vary)

Best regards,

Michael
