73T - Lightweight Carpet Install - Part 1

have had the Southbound rear seat delete carpet set hanging around for some time, awaiting the fitment of the rear cage and the seat lowering to be done.

Well, the summer holiday has proven most productive for the 73T, and with those jobs done, it was time to go from this :-

So far I have spent 10 hours over two days and taken 89 photos as a record - I have still have the transmission tunnel and fronts to do.

I generally followed the order in the excellent guide to carpet installation available from Appbiz.

This was complicated by having to cut around the roll cage, harness belt eyelets and the lowered seat mounts.

Tools used were essentially scissors, stanley knife, spray glue (from B&Q), chalk.

On the whole I am very pleased with the end result, given that I had to make patch pieces to cover the original seat mountings, and for the rear by the cage.

The car has a much more completed look and feel about it, going from the solid but brown / black / silvr POR finish to black carpet - it is not Perlon.

Some of the photos are poor, as for once it was very sunny and the camera found it difficult with the contrast of the bright light, black carpet and white / silver piant.

This serves as a record for myself of the work done, but may be of use to others if the contemplate the sane exercise.

I have the front to fit tomorrow so another update and more photos to come.

Nice work Ian! It is a lot of work but well worth the result. The carpet kit that I purchased a couple of years ago (from someone else) came with no directions! Talk about a puzzle!

BTW, does your car have a rear defroster? And if so, did you have any trouble installing the carpeting around it's wiring?

Tim, the wiring for the defroster runs from the passenger side through the rubber molding (bottom) over to the driver's side corner, the driver's side down in the molding to where they meetup and then go through a small hole in the farthest back corner of the rear deck and into the engine compartment and end on the 3-fuse block on the relay panel, driver's side.

Whilst I have the rear demistr and switch in place, there was no wiring in place for it, so I didn't have any worries there.

There is a very good article from Appbiz on how to install carpet (read that as which piece goes in which order - originally published by Rallystuff).
